Abstract: A model of the organization of interpersonal judgements, based on the hypothesis that people tend to organize their judgements in Golden Section ratios, was presented. A theory of the process of interpersonal judgement, based on the notion that people judge acquaintances using a Fibonacci-like decision rule, was then developed. A computer simulation of the theory yielded results consistent with the model. An experiment in which subjects judged a variety of sets of acquaintances also yielded results consistent with the model.

TL;DR: The old view of a psychiatrist as physician may be lost if he accepts only the role of administrator, PR man, member of a multiprofessional team with far-ranging, ubiquitous responsibilities.
Abstract: There are in the eyes of the world different sorts of ‘good’ psychiatrists. It depends who is making the judgement; it depends what is asked of the psychiatrist, what role he is expected to take and how successfully he has measured up to it. One would expect that the qualities of a doctor would be judged to a very large degree by his capacity to treat patients. This is what his long period of undergraduate and postgraduate training and education is about. Recently this concept of the doctor, and particularly that of consultant psychiatrist, has been challenged. The expectation that in the future he will continue to treat patients personally seems to be doubted. I wish to make my own attitude clear at the outset. The psychiatrist in my view is a physician in psychological medicine—a clinician—which means that his business and his professionalism are the personal care of patients. He is now called upon to do much more than this, and the reasons are several and complex. But the old view of a psychiatrist as physician may be lost if he accepts only the role of administrator, PR man, member of a multiprofessional team with far-ranging, ubiquitous responsibilities.

TL;DR: It is now nearly twenty years since Daniel Bell despatched ten theories "in search of Soviet reality" as discussed by the authors, each of these theories represented, despite some shading or overlap, a coherent judgement of Soviet behavior.
Abstract: It is now nearly twenty years since Daniel Bell despatched ten theories ‘in search of Soviet reality’. Each of these theories represented, ‘despite some shading or overlap,… a coherent judgement of Soviet behavior’. Considering them side by side, Bell thought, would make it easier to identify their respective merits and shortcomings; and it should also make clear which had ‘“stood up” in explaining events’, and which had not. Bell himself refrained from judgement on this point. In retrospect, however, it seems difficult to avoid the conclusion that none of the theories that Bell identified – nor indeed any of those that have joined them in more recent years – has yet come close to success. Rather, as the scholarly literature groans under the weight of a steadily-accumulating load of models and paradigms, each one more abstruse and more removed from reality than its predecessor, there must be many who would be inclined to agree with Alfred Hirschman that the continued search for conceptual innovation may well have become a positive ‘hindrance to understanding’.

TL;DR: In this paper, a systematic examination of one of the major social structures developed to foster the growth and regulation of the knowledge construction enterprise in social work-the professional journal is presented.
Abstract: The concern of this paper is a systematic examination of one of the major social structures developed to foster the growth and regulation of the knowledge construction enterprise in social work-the professional journal. The foci of the analyses are: 1) the normative criteria of editorial board members, 2) the characteristics of the editorial judges, and 3) the factors which influence editorial decision making. The achievements of science are etched on the pages of the professional journals. To execute the activities required for publication the professional journals have organized editorial boards. From their origin editorial boards have been responsible for defending the scientific literature from charlatans and the like, through the screening out of inadequate or improper contributions. However, with the accelerating demands on limited publication space, especially for the social sciences, editorial boards have come to shoulder a more difficult assignment. In addition to maintaining legitimacy, editorial boards are now responsible for determining standards for the levels of excellence required for publication. The quality of judgement of editorial board members fashion the aesthetic character and methodological precision of the scientific literature (Garvey and Griffith, 1971).

TL;DR: In this article, it is proposed to consider both assessments used in schools and some implications of looking at national performance, and it is, perhaps, appropriate to start with a consideration of the derivation and meaning of the verb 'assess':
Abstract: Over the years, judgements of school pupils' capabilities have contributed extensively to the route followed by those pupils through the educational system of the day and to the actual educational context of that route. As time has progressed so the methods of judgement have been altered to allow for 'improvements' to be made to the methods and such changes may be held to be taking place still. The balance between educational and psychological measures is not now what it was when the i i + examinations were in full swing but there is still a very large number of judgements made which affect the individual child; against this background has been taken the decision to introduce a regular national assessment of performance in a number of curriculum areas. It is proposed to consider here both assessments used in schools and some implications of looking at national performance. It is, perhaps, appropriate to start with a consideration of the derivation and meaning of the verb 'assess':

TL;DR: In this article, the authors consider how the gap between academic knowledge and practical experience can be bridged in the context of a manager's exercise of judgement, and suggest the concept of a decision-making framework as a model of the means by which a manager exercises judgement.
Abstract: This paper considers how the gap between ‘academic’ knowledge and ‘practical’ experience can be bridged in the context of a manager's exercise of judgement. It examines the role of the manager from three different perspectives in order to explain why the gap has a tendency to appear, and then suggests the concept of a decision‐making framework as a model of the means by which a manager exercises judgement. After describing the nature of this framework and its constituent elements, the paper considers the effects of different developmental methods on the framework and therefore on the quality of judgement. The paper concludes that support must be given to a new institution‐based educational perspective if the aim of developing the quality of judgement is to be achieved, and thereby the gap bridged.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors tried to sketch the general changes within Galtung's writings with respect to the concept of peace, the epistemological basis and in the areas analyzed.
Abstract: So far only the first two volumes on peace research and one of the volumes on methodology have been published. Even though final judgement will have to await the remaining volumes, this essay is an attempt to give a more comprehensive view than one would get from just looking at the published volumes. Since many of the articles are already available to the present author in one form or the other, I have tried to sketch the general changes within Galtung's writings with respect to the concept of peace, the epistemological basis and in the areas analyzed. The major trend is one of expansion. The consequences of this expansion are discussed, and it is concluded that the Essays may prove to be a source of creativity for the social scientist.

TL;DR: In the multiplication of books, and cultures, what you most want to know is whether a book is of those that you must cultivate, or those many from which you may avert your eyes as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: In the multiplication of books, and cultures, what you most want to know is whether a book is of those that you must cultivate, or those many from which you may avert your eyes. You need, in short, a judgement. Yet by a curious abstinence the modern Italian editor addresses himself to the establishment of a text, without a mention of anything that it might mean for you. There is an example of this single-mindedness in Pier-Giorgio Ricci's edition of Dante's Monarchia. Not only does he offer no judgement on the book, but while he examines the date of every manuscript, he never once discusses the date of the Monarchia, which is part of its meaning, and something that has been always matter for dispute. Yet we may say that without noticing he cuts the Gordian knot decisively in the mere exercise of his philological discipline. In a note, that is, to I, xxi he writes into the authentic text words which all previous editors had wrestled to dispose of: the reference from the Monarchia to what Dante had...

TL;DR: In this paper, the development and testing of an instrument to measure levels of aesthetic judgement making was discussed. But the instrument was not used to evaluate the quality of the artworks and the reasons for the choice of artworks.
Abstract: This study was concerned with the development and testing of an instrument to measure levels of aesthetic judgement making. The review of evaluation methods for aesthetic judgement resulted in a two-part instrument. Part one required the subject to select the better of two art works and to state the reasons for the choice. Part two, a self-scoring component, consisted of the Wilson categories presented as typical statements containing the primary criterion for the category. The subject was instructed to select the statements that were closest in meaning to his initial response.

TL;DR: It is frequently said that Great Britain is suffering from a shortage of scientists and technologists and of the means for conducting research and development and, since the study of shortages is the main interest of the economist, I propose to examine the reasons usually given for making this statement and to speculate a little about how a community can satisfy itself that it is devoting sufficient of its efforts to scientific and technical matters.
Abstract: It is frequently said that Great Britain is suffering from a shortage of scientists and technologists and of the means for conducting research and development and, since the study of shortages is the main interest of the economist, I propose to examine the reasons usually given for making this statement and to speculate a little about how a community can satisfy itself that it is devoting sufficient of its efforts to scientific and technical matters. As I shall try to explain in a moment, the scale of scientific activities in the country is determined by a very puzzling combination of public and private views, public and private action and, in the last resort, the striking of a right balance will inevitably be a matter of judgement and of intuition. Those who take sides too strongly, therefore, are not likely to give good advice, and I fear that, in recent years, some of those who have taken a vigorous part in the campaign for ‘selling science to the Establishment’ have been prone, with the best intentions in the world, to muddle up good arguments with bad and, paradoxically enough, to push the claims of science against the humane studies by making questionable use of history, economics, statistics and even perhaps educational theory.
