TL;DR: Document image understanding encompasses the technology required to make paper documents equivalent to other computer exchange media like floppies, tapes, and CDROMs and restricts ourselves to documents such as business letters, forms, and scientific and technical articles such as those found in archival journals and technical conferences.
Abstract: Document image understanding encompasses the technology required to make paper documents equivalent to other computer exchange media like floppies, tapes, and CDROMs. The physical reader of the paper document is the scanner just like the physical reader of the floppy is the floppy drive and the physical reader of the tape cartridge is the tape cartridge drive, and the physical reader of the CDROM is the CDROM drive. In the survey presented, we restrict ourselves to documents such as business letters, forms, and scientific and technical articles such as those found in archival journals and technical conferences. Understanding such documents involves estimating the rotation skew of each document page, determining the geometric page layout, labeling blocks as text or non-text, determining the read order for text blocks, recognizing the text of text blocks through an OCR system, determining the logical page layout, and formatting the data and information of the document in a suitable way for use by a word processing system or by an information retrieval system. >

TL;DR: In this paper, a method for designing spine layouts is presented, in which a main aisle is used for the movements between the work cells located on both side and for the temporary storage of work in process.
Abstract: We present a method for designing spine layouts. A spine layout is a layout in which a main aisle is used for the movements between the work cells located on both side and for the temporary storage of work in process. Our objective is to find a layout that minimizes both the handling costs and the investment costs. Also, a rectangular layout shape is searched for. With the proposed method, a design skeleton is first constructed with a heuristic. This design skeleton is then optimally transposed into a net layout via an integer linear program. Numerical results for layouts of 12 and 22 cells are presented.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method for printing a set of documents which differ from each other by a small area, a page specific image region, is described, where the page specific data are stored in one or more data files, generated by a database application program.
Abstract: A method of printing a set of documents which have a generally identical background image, and differ from each other by a small area, a page specific image region. A method is described to locate each page specific image region in a background image page layout. A master file stores this background image information along with positional parameters and a file reference to the page specific image region data. The page specific data are stored in one or more data files, generated by a database application program. The master file and page specific file are combined such that the background image is transformed to a bitmap only once, and the page specific data variously modify this bitmap to represent each individual page.

TL;DR: In this paper, a hybrid approach to plant layout design is presented using a constraint-directed search procedure and a mathematical optimization technique, where the whole space of a plant building is divided into the finite compartments with a modular size in order to separate the description of the layout into the combinatorial part and the sizing part.
Abstract: A hybrid type approach to plant layout design is presented using a constraint-directed search procedure and a mathematical optimization technique. In layout design, a plant must be arranged to satisfy spatial constraints imposed by its components. In our approach the whole space of a plant building is divided into the finite compartments with a modular size in order to separate the description of the layout into the combinatorial part and the sizing part. The approach consists of two steps. In the first step, a constraint-directed search procedure is applied to find a combinatorial solution among plant components so as to satisfy the spatial layout conditions. In the second step, an optimization technique is applied to determine the actual dimensions of components so as to minimize a measure of an overall size of a plant building considering size of components. The approach is implemented with an object-oriented programming environment and the system can automatically produce a layout from the declarative representation of layout conditions. Finally, the approach has been applied to the design of a nuclear power plant in order to check its validity and effectiveness.

TL;DR: In this article, a geometric reasoning model for automated fixture layout is presented, which imports geometric data of parts directly from a CAD system, reasons with geometric, tolerance and operation data, and automatically generates layout designs from the fixture component database provided.
Abstract: Fixture design has three design stages: conceptual, layout, and detail design. Geometric reasoning is one of the major tasks involved in layout design. This paper presents a geometric reasoning model for automated fixture layout. Desirable characteristics of layout design methodologies are first discussed. Computation models for cutting force effects, locator layout, clamp layout, and clamping forces are then presented in sequence. Finally, current implementation of a software system and results are described. The system imports geometric data of parts directly from a CAD system, reasons with geometric, tolerance and operation data, and automatically generates layout designs from the fixture component database provided.

TL;DR: In this paper, a heuristic, analytical model is developed to integrate the work in process storage space allocation and block layout planning steps of the facility design process, which is applicable when identical unit loads are transported by a discrete materials handling system.
Abstract: A heuristic, analytical model is developed to integrate the work in process storage space allocation and block layout planning steps of the facility design process. The model is applicable when identical unit loads are transported by a discrete materials handling system. The model is applied in the context of a ‘CRAFT like’ procedure where the user can reallocate storage space between departments on successive iterations while simultaneously considering materials handling volume distance and dynamically changing storage requirements. The scope of model inputs includes the layout, materials handling system attributes and production parameters. It is shown that the analytical nature of the model and scope of model inputs also allow the user to investigate significantly different production scenarios and materials handling system designs in layout planning. As a result, the model provides greater modelling flexibility than simulation and Petri net modelling in supporting sensitivity analyses in layout design...

Abstract: The platemaking system is a system that produces a printing plate by using an exposure device 8 to print on original film that has imposition data consisting of multiple page data imposed on photosensitive film. The system is equipped with page data layout device 2 and exposure device 8. Page data layout device 2 indicates page layout data that contains positioning information and size information of each page data for the purpose of impositioning multiple page data on photosensitive film. Based on that page layout data, each page data is laid out at the imposition position of the photosensitive film, imposition data is created and the indicated page layout data is output to exposure device 8. Exposure device 8 receives the page layout data via network line NL and moves the original film to the corresponding position in accordance with the received page layout data after which the exposure process is carried out. The device is equipped with keyboard 14 to indicate page layout data for the purpose of impositioning multiple page data on original film. Page data layout device 2 lays out corresponding page data in response to page layout data when the page data corresponding to the page number specified by page layout data is prepared and then creates imposition data. Further, when the page data is not prepared, page data layout device 2 lays out dummy page data in response to page layout data in place of page data and then creates imposition data.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To facilitate control over descentralized operations, specially, the progression conditions thereof when the operation are decentralized and performed by using plural layout design devices when the layout of printed matter is designed. CONSTITUTION:The layout design system is constituted by connecting the layout design devices 1a, 1b, and 1c to a communication means (a). The respective devices 1a, 1b, and 1c output signals at the start and end of each process of the operations. Then, the control means 11 of the device 1a totalizes the signals on the basis of the kinds of processes corresponding to the respective signals and the printed matter to generate transaction information indicating the progression extent of the transaction. The control means 11 outputs the transaction information to the devices 1a, 1b, and 1c according to indications from the respective devices 1a, 1b, and 1c. Then, operators of the devices 1a, 1b, and 1c schedule efficient operations and advance the operations.

Abstract: In the expanding field of visual applications, layout design and graphical editing tasks are crucial points. In this paper, we address the incorporation of AI aspects in the visual software design process and the automatic layout and beautification of informational graphics such as visual programs and chart diagrams. Since layout in dynamic settings frequently requires a direct manipulation responsiveness, an incremental redesign of the generated visual material is necessary. Following our previous work on constraint-based multimodal design, we show how powerful constraint processing techniques, such as constraint hierarchies and dynamic constraint satisfaction, can be applied to visual programming environments in order to maintain graphical style and consistency for a meaningful layout. We describe InLay, a system for constraint-based presenting and editing visual programs. Finally, we will have a short look at some extensions with regard to advanced interaction and visualization techniques.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To efficiently execute a verification processing without deteriorating the verification accuracy by extracting a coordinate value for passing through the side with respect to each graphic and setting it as a verification object, based on graphic data shown with a coordinate. CONSTITUTION:In a data storage part, layout design data is stored, and these design data are coordinate data of each graphic (pattern), and they are simplified to, for instance, nice pieces of graphics M1-M9, and the coordinate data related to its graphics are stored in the sequence determined in advance. Based on graphic data formed by showing plural graphics subjected to layout in such a way by coordinates, respectively, with respect to each graphic, coordinate values for passing through the side of its graphics are extracted in the X- coordinate or the Y-coordinate in advance. Subsequently, at every coordinate value thereof, the graphic having the side for passing through its coordinate value is extracted. In such a way, at the time of executing a verification processing of a dimension rule, the verification processing of the dimension rule is executed in tits extracted coordinate value, and with respect to these coordinate values, only the extracted graphic becomes its verification object.
