TL;DR: The ability of nitrate to alter ruminal fermentation by acting as an alternate electron acceptor was investigated in this paper, where sodium and potassium nitrate were either incorporated into the concentrate portion of a high grain ration fed to a nonlactating Jersey cow or were infused intraruminally in progressively larger amounts until nitrate (NO- 3 ) intake equaled 5 to 6% of total feed intake.

Abstract: The dc conductivity, the dielectric constant and the dielectric loss at 100 kHz and 3?6 GHz, have been measured for samples of potassium nitrite and potassium nitrate over a wide range of temperature. The dc conductivity and the dielectric constant show anomalies at ?13?C and 40?C in a crystal of KNO2 pulled from the melt. However, the dielectric anomaly at 40?C does not indicate a ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition and the room temperature phase of KNO2 seems not to be ferroelectric. The dc conductivity, the dielectric constant and loss measured in a randomly oriented single crystal, grown from aqueous solution, and a sample prepared from a melt of potassium nitrate, show anomalies at about 130?C on heating, and at about 124?C and 108?C on cooling. The dc conductivity, dielectric constant and loss value of the two samples of KNO3 together with the frequency effect in a melt sample of KNO3 are reported.

TL;DR: In this article, the Raman spectra of potassium nitrate were investigated under hydrostatic pressure up to 800 bars in the temperature range extending from room temperature to 145°C, and the lattice dynamical behavior of the direct high pressure II → III phase transition is quite similar to that of the atmospheric II → I phase transition suggesting that the structures of phases I and III are very close one another.

Abstract: E.m.f. measurements have been used to determine the activity coefficients of silver nitrate in six alkali nitrate melts with allowances for corrosion at low silver(I) concentrations and for liquid junction potentials which were estimated from conductance data. Four of the systems showed positive deviations from Raoult's law, potassium nitrate showed negative deviations and sodium nitrate + potassium nitrate eutectic showed almost ideal behaviour. The work constant W in cal mol–1 had the following values at 350°C for silver nitrate in the various solvents : LiNO3, 948; NaNO3, 755; KNO3, –653; (Li,Na)NO3, 762; (Li,K)NO3, 707; (Na, K)NO3, 95. W varied with temperature.

Abstract: The infrared and proton magnetic resonance spectra are reported for OH- and H2O at low concentration (<2 mol %) in a KNO3-NaNO2 melt at 150°C. The spectra indicate the absence of hydrogen bonding and the presence of restricted rotation and translation for OH- but the presence of strong complexing to cations and anions for H2O.

Abstract: 1. The influence of the acidity of the medium on the direction of the nitration of 2-thiophenaldehyde and 2-acetothienone in H2SO4 by the action of dry potassium nitrate was determined: when the H2SO4 concentration is increased from 70 to 100%, in both cases the amount of the 4-derivative formed is increased. The indicated effect is explained by the participation of protonated forms of the carbonyl compounds. 2. It was shown for the example of 2-thiophenaldehyde that nitration with nitronium fluoboride in 100% H2SO4 gives results close to those obtained using potassium nitrate. 3. The ratio of 4- and 5-derivatives in the nitration of 2-thiophenaldehyde in a neutral organic solvent with N-nitropicolinium fluoboride was determined. Under these conditions a mixture of approximately equimolar amounts of the 4- and 5-isomers is formed, i.e., the content of the 5-isomer is significantly greater than in the case of nitration in sulfuric acid in any of the concentrations studied.

Abstract: The growth response ofH. speciferum (Bain.) Nicot,H. rostratum Drechs.,H. hawaiiense Bougn.,H. nodulosum Berk. ex Curt. andH. halodes Drechs. towards fifteen different nitrogen sources was studied. Potassium nitrate, L-asparagine, DL-aspartic acid and L-tyrosine supported good growth, while L-cystine was a poor source for the organisms under study. Sodium nitrite did not permit any growth ofH. rostratum, H. nodulosum andH. halodes, while remaining two species accomplished very poor growth. DL-Tryptophane supported good growth ofH. rostratum, while rest of the species attained poor mycelial growth. DL-Leucine, L-arginine and DL-valine induced good mycelial growth ofH. rostratum, while rest of the species attained moderate mycelial growth.H. hawaiiense grew well on alanine, whileH. nodulosum made meagre growth and remaining three species achieved moderate growth. Ammonium nitrate was a good source forH. rostratum and moderate for remaining species, while ammonium sulphate was good forH. rostratum, moderate forH. hawaiiense and poor for rest of the species.

Abstract: With nitrate ions the polarons of water radiolysis undergo reaction to an intermediate of the tetravalent state of nitrogen. In presence of OH scavengers (ethanol, J−) nitrite is formed by a consequent reaction. But low yields due to back reactions were observed in pure solutions of nitrates [1, 2]. In 1 M sodium nitrate the nitrite yield was raised to = 6·5 molecules per 100 eV by addition of 0·15 M ammonia after Sharpaty et al. The effect was interpreted as oxidation of ammonia to nitrite and water [3]. We compared the yields of nitrite in deaerated solutions of potassium nitrate in presence of 0·2 M ammonia, 0·2 M methanol, or both after irradiation with 60Co-γ-rays. In 10−2 M solution nearly equals the polaron yield if ammonia was added.
