TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss how the WISA concept can be efficiently integrated into wired field networks for factory automation-both state-of-the-art [process fieldbus decentral peripherals (PROFIBUS DP)] and new [PROFINET IO] networks.
Abstract: Cost related to the wiring of sensors and actuators in the manufacturing industry is rapidly increasing with the number of field devices. Complex engineering as well as cable wear and tear are important factors. For over a decade, fieldbuses have been the dominating approach to simplify installation, reduce engineering efforts, and increase reliability at the field level. The next step in this process is to introduce wireless communication in certain problematic parts of the field network. In order to do this, a reliable real-time communication system, designed to cope with the harsh environments where factory automation systems are employed, is required. The wireless interface for sensors and actuators (WISA), with its two subconcepts WISA-power and WISA-com, is such a system. This paper discusses how the WISA concept can be efficiently integrated into wired field networks for factory automation-both state-of-the-art [process fieldbus decentral peripherals (PROFIBUS DP)] and new (PROFINET IO) networks. We propose amendments to WISA, which will improve the 802.11b/g coexistence and harmonize the integration of WISA for sensor/actuator communication in, e.g., PROFINET IO systems. The suggested improvements relate to both the radio protocol in order to improve coexistence with other wireless technologies as well as concepts for the integration of WISA into the field network of PROFINET/PROFIBUS.

TL;DR: It is shown that it is possible to attack and gain control over PROFINET IO nodes and also that this can be done without any of the communicating peers detecting the attack.
Abstract: In this paper we show that it is possible to attack and gain control over PROFINET IO nodes and also that this can be done without any of the communicating peers detecting the attack. Analysis of attacks in both shared and packet switched networks show that the attacker can control the process data and thus the state of the machines connected to the I/O modules. As the security risks are increasing in automation with the level of vertical and horizontal integration, the concept of security modules is proposed towards a method to retrofit security in PROFINET IO. The concept of security modules can be applied without changing anything in the underlying transmission system and is extendable if and when new security threats are identified.

TL;DR: An algorithm that allows one to create a static schedule of the Profinet IO IRT communication, which is an industrial Ethernet protocol standardised in IEC, is presented, providing comparable results regarding the resulting time schedule length.
Abstract: This paper presents an algorithm that allows one to create a static schedule of the Profinet IO IRT communication, which is an industrial Ethernet protocol standardised in IEC$\;$61158. This algorithm offers an alternative to the available commercial tool, providing comparable results regarding the resulting time schedule length. Furthermore, we extend the problem by useful time constraints providing a greater flexibility with respect to the individual messages. Due to this flexibility, it is possible to place the selected messages in various parts of the communication cycle, to define end-to-end delays, or to increase the computational time available for the main-controller application, for example. The solution is based on a formulation of the Profinet IO IRT scheduling problem in terms of the Resource Constrained Project Scheduling with Temporal Constraints (PS|temp|Cmax).

TL;DR: This paper compute the most relevant performance indicators introduced by IEC 61784 standard and two (purposely defined) additional ones, namely minimum cycle time and jitter, which are suitable for the two networks considered.
Abstract: The employment of Real Time Ethernet networks in factory automation systems is rapidly increasing and several commercial products, with different characteristics, are already available from various manufacturers. Most of these networks have been included in both the IEC 61158 and IEC 61784 International Standards that, in addition, define a set of Performance Indicators. In this paper we focus on two popular Real Time Ethernet networks, namely Ethernet POWERLINK and EtherCAT, and we evaluate their performance for a typically deployed factory automation configuration. Specifically, we compute the most relevant performance indicators introduced by IEC 61784 standard and two (purposely defined) additional ones, namely minimum cycle time and jitter, which are suitable for the two networks considered.

TL;DR: This paper introduces how to combine a wireless Fieldbus to an existing wired Fieldbus by presenting an example for health monitoring of elderly people in an automated home environment.
Abstract: Wireless sensor networks (WSN) have recently been proposed for a large range of applications in home and industrial automation, and for health and environment monitoring. Especially the ZigBee standard is getting rising attention as it can be used to implement wireless sensor networks, because of its low data rate and low power consumption. Increasingly there is a need to access wireless sensor network from other IP-based networks and also there is a need to add the wireless sensor functionalities to existing industrial Ethernet networks (field buses, Profibus, Profinet). In this paper we introduce how to combine a wireless Fieldbus to an existing wired Fieldbus by presenting an example for health monitoring of elderly people in an automated home environment.

TL;DR: In this paper, a real-time application requirement of services is provided by the present invention, where a preset data transmission cycle is divided into N periods, which include at least two types of high real time (HRT) communication period, Low Real Time (LRT) communications period and Non Real Time communication period.
Abstract: A communication method in a PROFINET communication system is provided by the present invention. According to the real-time application requirement of services, a preset data transmission cycle is divided into N periods, which include at least two types of High Real Time (HRT) communication period, Low Real Time (LRT) communication period and Non Real Time (NRT) communication period. An Access Point (AP) performs data transmission according to HRT transmission mechanism in the HRT communication period of the data transmission cycle, and performs data transmission according to LRT transmission mechanism in the LRT communication period, and performs data transmission according to NRT transmission mechanism in the NRT communication period. By using the method, the requirement of the coexistence of applications with different real-time requirements can be satisfied in PROFINET communication.

TL;DR: A heuristic scheduling algorithm is presented to minimise the reserved bandwith in fieldbus systems like Profinet IRT to allow additional non real-time communication in these networks and to get short communication cycles.
Abstract: Fieldbus systems like Profinet IRT use network technologies which are compatible with common office networks like Ethernet. In order to enable real-time communication, bandwidth reservation is used in these networks. The length of the reserved bandwidth depends on preplanned message schedules. It is an important task to minimise the reserved bandwith to allow additional non real-time communication in these networks and to get short communication cycles. In this paper a heuristic scheduling algorithm is presented. This paper is based on ongoing work and presents first results.

Abstract: An approach for fully integrated automation with Profibus and protocol conversion gateway is proposed and implemented within an industrial control network consisting of different kinds of devices, as there are several fieldbus subsystems and Ethernet segment coexisting. Based on the analysis of Profibus protocol, a design scheme for Profibus-DP communication interface to implement master or slave functions was presented. Aiming at realizing interoperation between Profibus devices and other fieldbus devices, a gateway system for protocol conversion is designed. Profinet technology is adopted to encapsulate Profibus devices into Profinet components, which provides an efficient way to connect fieldbus device to industrial Ethernet by means of node-to-node communication.

Abstract: This paper deals with the model generation for automation systems. A generic solution is presented, which analyses existing Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) documents and thereof automatically generates simulation models. They are described as Modelica models and use a special library, customized for the automation branch. It contains common elements which can be parameterized with very few efforts. Additional components for the communication to the control are available. They support several widely accepted technologies like OPC, Profibus, Profinet, analog and digital signals. The generation process focuses on being as automated as possible. It is a general approach, which could be applied to various types of simulation with different levels of detail. Its integration into a software prototype shows the feasibility and provides first practical feedback.
