TL;DR: International evidence of research participants’ attitudes towards the sharing of data for secondary research use is reviewed to identify four themes regarding research participants' attitudes and preferences, which should be considered by policy makers, and explored with further research.
Abstract: Objectives Data sharing is well established in biological research, but evidence on sharing of clinical trial or public health research study data remains limited, in particular studies of research participants' perspectives of data sharing. This study systematically reviewed international evidence of research participants' attitudes towards the sharing of data for secondary research use. Methods Systematic search of seven databases, and author-, citation- and bibliography-follow up to identify studies examining research participants' attitudes towards data sharing. Studies were thematically analysed using NVivo v10 to identify recurring themes. Results Nine studies were eligible for inclusion. Thematic analysis identified four key themes: (1) benefits of data sharing, including benefit to participants or immediate community, benefits to the public and benefits to science or research; (2) fears and harms, such as fear of exploitation, stigmatization or repercussions, alongside concerns about confidentiality and misuse of data; (3) data sharing processes, in particular the role of consent in the process; and (4) the relationship between participants and research such as trust in different types of research or organization and the relationship with the original research team. Conclusions The available literature on attitudes towards sharing data from clinical trials or public health interventions remains scant. This study has identified four themes regarding research participants' attitudes and preferences, which should be considered by policy makers, and explored with further research.

TL;DR: A comparison of data sharing platforms for de-identified clinical research data in terms of their size, policies and supported features and a case study approach is used to describe in greater detail one data sharing platform (Data Share from National Institute of Drug Abuse).
Abstract: Data sharing of de-identified individual participant data is being adopted by an increasing number of sponsors of human clinical trials. In addition to standardizing data syntax for shared trial data, semantic integration of various data elements is the focus of several initiatives that define research common data elements. This perspective article, in the first part, compares several data sharing platforms for de-identified clinical research data in terms of their size, policies and supported features. In the second part, we use a case study approach to describe in greater detail one data sharing platform (Data Share from National Institute of Drug Abuse). We present data on the past use of the platform, data formats offered, data de-identification approaches and its use of research common data elements. We conclude with a summary of current and expected future trends that facilitate secondary research use of data from completed human clinical trials.

TL;DR: This paper conducted a scoping review, using the search terms self-plagiarism and self-hyphenated, consulting five social sciences research databases, supplemented by a manual search for articles, resulting in over 5900 results and finding 47 sources (34.3%) were editorials; 41 (29.9%) were conceptual research; 12 (8.6%) were secondary research; and only 8 sources (5.8%) were primary research.
Abstract: Self-plagiarism is a contentious issue in higher education, research and scholarly publishing contexts. The practice is problematic because it disrupts scientific publishing by over-emphasizing results, increasing journal publication costs, and artificially inflating journal impact, among other consequences. We hypothesized that there was a dearth of empirical studies on the topic of self-plagiarism, with an over-abundance of editorial and commentary articles based on anecdotal evidence. The research question was: What typologies of evidence characterize the literature on self-plagiarism in scholarly and research journals? We conducted a scoping review, using the search terms “self-plagiarism” and “self-plagiarism” (hyphenated), consulting five social sciences research databases, supplemented by a manual search for articles, resulting in over 5900 results. After removing duplicates and excluding non-scholarly sources, we arrived at a data set of 133 sources, with publication dates ranging from 1968 to 2017. With an interrater reliability of over 93% between two researchers, our typological analysis revealed 47 sources (34.3%) were editorials; 41 (29.9%) were conceptual research (including teaching cases); 16 (11.7%) were editorial responses; 12 (8.6%) were secondary research; and only 8 sources (5.8%) were primary research. There is little guidance in the available literature to graduate students or their professors about how to disentangle the complexities of self-plagiarism. With primary and secondary research combined accounting for 14.4% of overall contributions to the data set, and primary research constituting only 6% of overall contributions, we conclude with a call for more empirical evidence on the topic to support contributions to the scholarly dialogue.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors defined the sense of family company's success and analyzed one representative family company managed by several generations as a case study for identifying its key success factors based on the received information.
Abstract: During the last time, the attention to a phenomenon of family business steadily grows. Today this form of business is considered to be a vital and needful for economic development. Despite this, the basic theory of family business is heterogeneous, limited and insufficient. The purpose of this paper is to define the sense of family company’s success. The object of research is family business as an economic phenomenon. There is a double subject of this study: firstly, to find out the main indicators and information resources about successful companies can be detected and, secondly, to analyze one representative family company managed by several generations as a case study for identifying its key success factors. This qualitative research was prepared on the basis of general theoretical scientific methods, in particular, analysis, synthesis, analogy, comparison, generalizations and methods of expert estimates. In the first phase, secondary research of scientific literature and electronic resources about the paper topic was conducted. On the base of that results, the primary research was conduct, which is based on analysis of family wine company Quinta de Santa Eufemia in Portugal. That research part has the form of a case study. Based on the received information, the key success factors were identified. The sources of that research are internet web-pages of the company, articles about the company in magazines and scientific journals form Emerald database, reports of the company and financial data from Amadeus database, in-depth interview with a family member of a family company representative. The scientific acquisition of this research is improving understanding of a family company’s success from the perspective of difficulties faced by a family company and the way of overcoming obstacles. The results of this study allowed to find a main point for the family company’s success based on literature review. In addition, the activity of Quinta de Santa Eufemia was analyzed as the case study for critical evidence of that phenomenon. This study has contributed to the theoretical part of family business research providing a significant step to providing insight the family company’s success and its main factors which influence an effective functioning of a family company. Keywords: family company, success, winery, family business

TL;DR: This study measured significant variation in reporting quality, and observed biases in many aspects of cancer research reporting, including the types of study selected for coverage, and in the spectrum of cancer types, gender of scientists, and geographical source of research represented.
Abstract: Cancer research in the news is often associated with sensationalising and inaccurate reporting, giving rise to false hopes and expectations. The role of study selection for cancer-related news stories is an important but less commonly acknowledged issue, as the outcomes of primary research are generally less reliable than those of meta-analyses and systematic reviews. Few studies have investigated the quality of research that makes the news and no previous analyses of the proportions of primary and secondary research in the news have been found in the literature. The main aim of this study was to investigate the nature and quality of cancer research covered in online news reports by four major news sources from USA, UK and Australia. We measured significant variation in reporting quality, and observed biases in many aspects of cancer research reporting, including the types of study selected for coverage, and in the spectrum of cancer types, gender of scientists, and geographical source of research represented. We discuss the implications of these finding for guiding accurate, contextual reporting of cancer research, which is critical in helping the public understand complex science and appreciate the outcomes of publicly funded research, avoid undermining trust in science, and assist informed decision-making.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors outline human resource management strategies in educational institutions and investigate the implications of the systemic approach, which is based on the principles of systemic theory and suggests the imperative need of knowledge of conflict management by education executives.
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to outline human resource management strategies in educational institutions and investigate the implications of the systemic approach. The methodology is the combination of primary and secondary research. Primary research is quantitative and refers to a case study on conflict management in an educational organization between the Director and his subordinates. The method of collecting data was the on-site observation from the position of deputy director, since it is an experiential experience. Secondary research is based on content analysis from different case studies, draws data from modern literature, leads to critical analysis of human resource management strategy theories and examines their effectiveness. Conflict in an educational organization is influenced by both structural and personal factors. According to modern theories of management education, conflicts in an educational organization can be both positive and negative and can positively contribute to activating people for greater effort and efficient operation. This research argues that a comprehensive analysis of the environment and complex systems can contribute to the understanding of contemporary issues. It is based on the principles of systemic theory and suggests the imperative need of knowledge of conflict management by education executives. There are bibliographic gaps in the recording and analysis of case studies, dealing with the management and resolution of conflicts between education staff and subordinates.

TL;DR: This paper describes the motivation, relevant literature, and methodological approaches to address the primary research question: How do recently transitioned engineering managers make sense of their managerial work experiences.
Abstract: In this work in progress paper, we discuss how engineers make sense of their experiences in transitioning to managerial/leadership roles. Developing engineering talent in organizations has long been an issue for industries. Notably, with rapidly changing business models and flattened organizational structures, engineers are required to transition into managerial and leadership roles more quickly than ever before. Yet engineers and employers alike often characterize this as a difficult transition. Further, there remains a lack of empirical research on the nature of engineering managerial work practices. The research project described in this study will address the broader research topic: to holistically uncover the experiences of recently transitioned engineering managers. Specifically, this paper describes the motivation, relevant literature, and methodological approaches to address the primary research question: How do recently transitioned engineering managers make sense of their managerial work experiences? Complimentary and secondary research questions include: 1) What are the challenges faced by engineers as they transitioned into their new roles as engineering managers or leaders?, and 2) What specific competencies and/or strategies did the subjects view as essential for their survival and success at work? This paper presents an overview of the study design, including justifications for the use of relevant methodological frameworks and methods for the research. The paper concludes with a discussion of future work, as well as potential implications such as related to creating training content for professional development of engineers.
