TL;DR: An electro-optic cable includes at least one thin-wall steel alloy tube (20) containing at least single mode fiber (15) and a void filling gel (16) to assure the capability for transmitting low-noise optical phase data.
Abstract: An electro-opto-mechanical cable includes at least one thin-wall steel alloy tube (20) containing at least one single mode fiber (15) and a void filling gel (16) to assure the capability for transmitting low-noise optical phase data. A dielectric annulus (25) and an electrically conductive layer (50) disposed therein helps further assure watertight integrity and power or electrical signal transfer. An optional double-layer contrahelical or three or four layer, torque balanced, steel wire strength member (68, 78) provides additional protection as well as capability to be towed, deployed and recovered from the seafloor at abysmal depths. The steel armor and cable core interface eliminates all intersticial spaces associated with the armor wires to produce a firm, hard cable that experiences minimal residual strain (creep) due to extensive load cycling. A pressure extruded outer jacket aids in assuring the protection of the individual steel wires from point loadings and from strength degradation due to corrosion. Further, the integral steel armor and jacketing structure provides protection for the electro-optic core from abrasion against rock or coral at cable suspension points during sustained cable strumming.

TL;DR: In this article, a temperature sensing element (thermocouple, thermistor, or resistance temperature detector) for high temperature application is housed inside a metal tube, with lead wires to the temperature sensing elements insulated from each other and the tube by a compactable mineral insulation material such as magnesium oxide.
Abstract: A temperature sensing element (thermocouple, thermistor, or resistance temperature detector) for high temperature application is housed inside a metal tube, with lead wires to the temperature sensing element insulated from each other and the tube by a compactable mineral insulation material such as magnesium oxide. Initially the insulation material is in the form of a molded cylindrical preform with two lengthwise passages through which the lead wires are inserted. After the wires are inserted through the preform, the tube is placed around the preform and compressed to reduce its diameter. This crushes and tightly packs the insulation material around the lead wires. A strain relief and moisture seal may be provided at the end of the tube away from the temperature sensing element.

TL;DR: In this article, the insertion tube is formed by a braided wire tube covered by a flexible waterproof coating and surrounding a resilient D-shaped tube through which optical components for the endoscope extend.
Abstract: An endoscope specially adapted for use with a disposable sheath having an outer casing and one or more internal channels. The endoscope includes a tip portion connected to a control handle through a flexible insertion tube. The insertion tube is formed by a braided wire tube covered by a flexible waterproof coating and surrounding a resilient D-shaped tube through which optical components for the endoscope extend. A longitudinally extending groove is formed in the braided tube to receive the channel(s). The groove extends perpendicular to, and makes contact with, a generally planar portion of the D-shaped tube so that the D-shaped tube can restrict deformation of the groove as the insertion tube bends. Longitudinal channels are formed on opposite sides of the groove to house control cables extending from the control handle to the tip portion. The cables are surrounded by tubes that collectively occupy the entire channel so that the tubes prevent the channel, and hence the groove, from collapsing.

TL;DR: In this article, a thermocouple temperature sensor employs a protecting tube made of metal-boride-based ceramics, and a platinum-rhodium-based thermocomposite.
Abstract: A thermocouple temperature sensor employs a protecting tube made of metal-boride-based ceramics, and a platinum -rhodium-based thermocouple. To prevent a deterioration of the thermocouple due to a reducing gas generated in the protecting when used at a high service temperature, the thermocouple is placed in an insulation tube, which is placed inside the protecting tube. In addition, a front end portion of the insulation tube is covered with a noble-metal cap mainly composed of platinum group metal, to prevent the reducing gas generated in the protecting tube from reaching a connection point of the thermocouple. The top end of the protecting tube is open, and a terminal box with a ventilation means to smoothly discharge the reducing gas in provided. This arrangement remarkably prolongs the service life of the thermocouple, and thus it is able to continuously measure the temperature of molten pig iron and molten steel for a long interval.

TL;DR: An epidural catheter is disclosed having a durable and a flexible segment joined together as mentioned in this paper, which is inserted into a patient with the use of a well-known needle which is removed by passing the needle over the outside of the catheter.
Abstract: An epidural catheter is disclosed having a durable and a flexible segment joined together. The flexible segment is inserted into a patient with the use of a well-known needle which is removed by passing the needle over the outside of the catheter. The flexible segment is atraumatic to the surrounding tissue. The flexible segment includes a plastic tube surrounded by a wire coil for pushing the tube into a passageway of the tissue. The distal end of the plastic tube and wire coil are joined to prevent unwinding of the coil when extracted. The tightly coupled wire coil also permits the flexible portion to be easily inserted into the passageway of the tissue. The durable segment joined to the flexible segment includes a stainless steel tube with a flat wire coil surrounding a length of the tube. The stainless steel tube permits fluid at an elevated pressure to pass through the hollow passageway therein without rupturing. The flat wire coil prevents kinking of the semi-rigid stainless steel tube. When a fluid at an elevated pressure is received, the distal end of the flexible tube is closed to diffuse the fluid passing through the length of the catheter. Slits are provided laterally on the side of the plastic tube for emitting and diffusing the fluid through the wire coil.

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of supplementing ITFF with pectin on colonic function as measured by stool consistency and colonic fluid composition in 13 normal adults were investigated.
Abstract: Diarrhea is one of the most common complications in patients who receive tube-feeding formulas. Since the colon is the final site of water and electrolyte absorption and ultimately determines fecal composition, diarrhea during tube feeding may result from altered colonic function. The lack of dietary fiber, such as pectin, in tube-feeding formulas may be one of the means by which colonic function is affected. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a standard, liquid, commercially available, isotonic tube-feeding formula (ITFF) and the effects of supplementing the ITFF with pectin on colonic function as measured by stool consistency and colonic fluid composition in 13 normal adults. Data were obtained when subjects consumed their regular diet, ITFF, and ITFF supplemented with pectin using the technique of in vivo dialysis of colonic fluid. Ingestion of the ITFF resulted in a significant increase in the percentage of liquid stools compared to a regular diet [median (interquartile range) = 0% (0), 60% (64); p less than 0.01]. Ingestion of the ITFF also resulted in significant decreases in the concentrations of sodium, potassium, and short-chain fatty acids, and increases in pH and osmotic gap in colonic fluid compared to the subjects' regular diet. Supplementing the ITFF with pectin significantly reduced the incidence of liquid stools [0% (0)] and promoted a normalization of colonic fluid composition. The results suggest that the addition of pectin may enhance tolerance to ITFFs.

TL;DR: In this article, a metallurgically compatible insert is installed in the damaged end and controllably rollerexpanded to eliminate any end step at the downstream end as well as to prevent over expansion of the damaged tube and insert.
Abstract: Heat exchanger tubing has failure rates due to inlet end related problems in the 85-90% range. Such failures are normally limited to the first three to six inches of the tube inlet ends. The present method eliminates the problem without relining, removing, or sealing the tubes. The tube ends are first inspected and the condition of the inlet areas of the tubing determined. If the ends are eroded or corroded, the tube ends are cleaned down to the metal. Then a metallurgically compatible insert is installed in the damaged end and controllably roller-expanded to eliminate any end step at the downstream end as well as to prevent over expansion of the damaged tube and insert. The input end of the insert is flared to the existing inlet tube profile, thereby restoring the damaged area. This process eliminates totally replacing or relining the existing tubes. If erosion is severe, a bushing is inserted between the insert and the tube end and they are roller-expanded together. The tube may also be bored out to restore tube concentricity before the insert is installed. In another embodiment the damaged tube end is severed and replaced with a collar before the insert is installed and then roller-expanded to restore the damaged end.

TL;DR: In this paper, a flexible stylet wire with an expandable wire coil attached to the distal end for engaging the coiled structure of the pacemaker lead was used to remove a pacemaker from a heart.
Abstract: Heart lead removal apparatus and method are disclosed for removing a pacemaker lead from a heart through a blood vessel leading thereto. The apparatus comprises a flexible stylet wire with an expandable wire coil attached to the distal end for engaging the coiled structure of the pacemaker lead. A lockable mechanism grasps the proximal end of the lead, and a wire guide is inserted in the passageway of the lead to determine its size and clear any blockage therein. The stylet wire is inserted in the longitudinal passageway of the coiled structure to the distal end of the pacemaker lead. The stylet wire is rotated in a direction to unwind and expand the wire coil and engage the coiled structure, thereby securing the stylet wire to the pacemaker lead. A tie secures the insulating material to the coiled structure of the lead at the proximal end thereof to limit motion and to apply a uniform extraction force to the entire lead. A separator tube is inserted over the proximal end of the stylet wire and the lead and moved along the entire length of the lead to first separate the restricted lead from the blood vessel and then the heart cavity. The separator tube, stylet wire, and pacemaker lead are then removed from the heart cavity and blood vessel without causing any significant injury to the heart cavity wall.

TL;DR: A plant nutrient delivery system that uses a microporous, hydrophilic tube was developed with potential application for crop production in the microgravity of space, and the reduced yield at higher suction suggests that the plants experienced water stress.
Abstract: A plant nutrient delivery system that uses a microporous, hydrophilic tube was developed with potential application for crop production in the microgravity of space. The tube contains a nutrient solution and delivers it to the roots. Pumps attached to the tubing create a very small suction that holds the solution within the tube. This system was used to grow wheat for 107 d in a controlled environment at suctions of 0.40, 1.48, or 2.58 kPa. The water absorbed through the pores of the tube by baby diaper sections decreased as suction increased. Correspondingly, final plant biomass, seed number, and spikelet number also tended to decrease as suction increased. The reduced yield at higher suction suggests that the plants experienced water stress, although all suctions were below those typical of soils at field capacity.
