Abstract: The refractive index of liquid water is known at various frequencies in the radio and microwave regions from measurements of the complex permittivity and in the infrared and beyond from direct measurement1. It is known in the submillimetre region only at a few discrete frequencies2,3. The effects of temperature variation have been measured only at 2,970 m−1 ; all other data refer to ambient temperature. Various curves representing interpolated estimates of the refraction spectrum have been given1,4 but there is a real need for measurements, preferably at many frequencies and over a wide range of temperature, since such detailed knowledge is required in many applications.
