Metabolic Modulator Perhexiline Corrects Energy Deficiency and Improves Exercise Capacity in Symptomatic Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
K Abozguia,Perry M. Elliott,William J. McKenna,Thanh T. Phan,Ganesh Nallur-Shivu,Ibrar Ahmed,Abdul R. Maher,Kulvinder Kaur,Jenny C. Taylor,Anke Henning,Houman Ashrafian,Hugh Watkins,Michael P. Frenneaux +12 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the metabolic modulator perhexiline was used to ameliorate myocardial energy deficiency and thereby improve diastolic function and exercise capacity in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy patients.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hypoxic Modulation of Exogenous Nitrite-Induced Vasodilation in Humans
Abdul R. Maher,Alexandra B. Milsom,Prasad Gunaruwan,Khalid Abozguia,Ibrar Ahmed,Rebekah Weaver,P.J. Thomas,Houman Ashrafian,Gustav V. R. Born,Philip E. James,Michael P. Frenneaux +10 more
TL;DR: Arteries are modestly affected in normoxia but potently dilated in hypoxia, which suggests the important phenomenon of hypoxic augmentation of nitrite-mediated vasodilation in vivo and as a potent venodilator in heart failure has therapeutic implications.
Journal ArticleDOI
The role of vascular myoglobin in nitrite-mediated blood vessel relaxation
Julian O M Ormerod,Houman Ashrafian,Abdul R. Maher,Sayqa Arif,Violetta Steeples,Gustav V. R. Born,Stuart Egginton,Martin Feelisch,Hugh Watkins,Michael P. Frenneaux +9 more
TL;DR: Myoglobin is present in the murine vasculature and contributes significantly to nitrite-induced vasodilation, which is confirmed to confirm the presence of myoglobin in murine aortic tissue and to test the hypothesis that vascular wall myoglobin is important for nitite-induced Vasodilation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Reduced in vivo skeletal muscle oxygen consumption in patients with chronic heart failure : A study using Near Infrared Spectrophotometry (NIRS)
Khalid Abozguia,Thanh T. Phan,Ganesh Nallur Shivu,Abdul R. Maher,Ibrar Ahmed,Anton J. M. Wagenmakers,Michael P. Frenneaux +6 more
TL;DR: Near Infrared Spectrophotometry during arterial occlusion is used to measure resting skeletal muscle oxygen consumption in chronic heart failure patients and in age‐matched healthy volunteers (HVs).
Journal ArticleDOI
Impact of chronic congestive heart failure on pharmacokinetics and vasomotor effects of infused nitrite
Abdul R. Maher,Sayqa Arif,Melanie Madhani,Khalid Abozguia,Ibrar Ahmed,Bernadette O. Fernandez,Martin Feelisch,Aine G. O'Sullivan,Arthur Christopoulos,Aaron L. Sverdlov,D. Ngo,Rustem Dautov,Philip E. James,John D. Horowitz,Michael P. Frenneaux +14 more
TL;DR: The aim of the current study was to compare the haemodynamic effects of NO2− in healthy volunteers and patients with stable congestive heart failure (CHF).
