Environmental Surveillance for Polioviruses in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative
Humayun Asghar,Ousmane M. Diop,Goitom Weldegebriel,Farzana Malik,Sushmitha A. Shetty,Laila El Bassioni,Adefunke O. Akande,Eman Al Maamoun,Syed Sohail Zahoor Zaidi,Adekunle J. Adeniji,Cara C. Burns,Jagadish M. Deshpande,M. Steve Oberste,Sara A. Lowther +13 more
TL;DR: The status of environmental surveillance used by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative is summarized, the rationale for ES is provided, examples of ES methods and findings are given, and how these data are used to achieve poliovirus eradication are summarized.
Journal ArticleDOI
Multiple Independent Emergences of Type 2 Vaccine-Derived Polioviruses during a Large Outbreak in northern Nigeria
Cara C. Burns,Jing Shaw,Jaume Jorba,David Bukbuk,F.D. Adu,N. Gumede,Muhammed A. Pate,Emmanuel Abanida,Alex Gasasira,Jane Iber,Qi Chen,Annelet Vincent,Paul Chenoweth,Elizabeth Henderson,Kathleen Wannemuehler,Asif Naeem,Rifqiyah Nur Umami,Yorihiro Nishimura,Hiroyuki Shimizu,Marycelin Baba,Adekunle J. Adeniji,A. J. Williams,David R. Kilpatrick,M. S. Oberste,Steve Wassilak,Oyewale Tomori,Mark A. Pallansch,Olen M. Kew +27 more
TL;DR: It is estimated from the poliomyelitis case count and the paralytic case-to-infection ratio for type 2 wild poliovirus infections that ∼700,000 cVDPV2 infections have occurred during the outbreak.
Journal ArticleDOI
In vitro cytotoxic activity of medicinal plants from Nigeria ethnomedicine on Rhabdomyosarcoma cancer cell line and HPLC analysis of active extracts
TL;DR: The results demonstrate the cytotoxicity of Macaranga barteri and Calliandra portoricensis extracts, which are used in Nigerian folklore for cancer treatment.
Journal ArticleDOI
In vitro antiviral activity of twenty-seven medicinal plant extracts from Southwest Nigeria against three serotypes of echoviruses.
Omonike O. Ogbole,Toluwanimi E. Akinleye,Peter A. Segun,Temitope Oluwasegun Cephas Faleye,Adekunle J. Adeniji +4 more
TL;DR: The antiviral screening showed that ten out of the 27 crude plant extracts tested were active on E7 and E19, inhibiting the cytopathic effect of the virus in tissue culture, suggesting that this extract may have potential as a therapeutic agent in the treatment of enteroviral infections.
Journal ArticleDOI
Environmental Isolation of Circulating Vaccine-Derived Poliovirus After Interruption of Wild Poliovirus Transmission — Nigeria, 2016
Andrew Etsano,Eunice Damisa,Faisal Shuaib,Gatei wa Nganda,Ogu Enemaku,Samuel Usman,Adekunle J. Adeniji,Jaume Jorba,Jane Iber,Chima Ohuabunwo,Chimeremma Nnadi,Eric Wiesen +11 more
TL;DR: The detection of persistent circulation of VDPV2 in Borno State highlights the low population immunity, surveillance limitations, and risk for international spread of cVDPVs associated with insurgency-related insecurity.
