Journal ArticleDOI
Multiple Independent Emergences of Type 2 Vaccine-Derived Polioviruses during a Large Outbreak in northern Nigeria
Cara C. Burns,Jing Shaw,Jaume Jorba,David Bukbuk,F.D. Adu,N. Gumede,Muhammed A. Pate,Emmanuel Abanida,Alex Gasasira,Jane Iber,Qi Chen,Annelet Vincent,Paul Chenoweth,Elizabeth Henderson,Kathleen Wannemuehler,Asif Naeem,Rifqiyah Nur Umami,Yorihiro Nishimura,Hiroyuki Shimizu,Marycelin Baba,Adekunle J. Adeniji,A. J. Williams,David R. Kilpatrick,M. S. Oberste,Steve Wassilak,Oyewale Tomori,Mark A. Pallansch,Olen M. Kew +27 more
TL;DR: It is estimated from the poliomyelitis case count and the paralytic case-to-infection ratio for type 2 wild poliovirus infections that ∼700,000 cVDPV2 infections have occurred during the outbreak.
Journal ArticleDOI
Key issues in the persistence of poliomyelitis in Nigeria: a case-control study
Tara D. Mangal,R. Bruce Aylward,Michael Mwanza,Alex Gasasira,Emmanuel Abanida,Muhammed A. Pate,Nicholas C. Grassly +6 more
TL;DR: Although high refusal rates, low OPV campaign awareness, and heterogeneous population immunity continued to support poliomyelitis transmission in Nigeria at the end of 2012, overall population immunity had improved due to new OPV formulations and improvements in programme delivery.
Journal ArticleDOI
Population health outcomes in Nigeria compared with other west African countries, 1998–2019: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study
Blake Angell,Olutobi Adekunle Sanuade,Ifedayo M. O. Adetifa,Iruka N. Okeke,Aishatu L. Adamu,Muktar H. Aliyu,Emmanuel A. Ameh,Fatima Kyari,Muktar A Gadanya,Diana A. Salako,Fatima H Zanna,Scott D Glenn,Ally Walker,Maha Ezalarab,Mohsen Naghavi,Ibrahim Abubakar +35 more
TL;DR: Better outcomes in countries with equivalent or lower health expenditure suggest health system strengthening and targeted intervention to address unsafe water sources, poor sanitation, malnutrition, and exposure to air pollution could substantially improve population health.
Journal ArticleDOI
Spatial Dynamics and High Risk Transmission Pathways of Poliovirus in Nigeria 2001-2013.
Tara D. Mangal,R. Bruce Aylward,Faisal Shuaib,Michael Mwanza,Muhammed A. Pate,Emmanuel Abanida,Nicholas C. Grassly +6 more
TL;DR: Poliovirus transmission in Nigeria is predominantly localised, occurring between spatially contiguous areas and should be guided by knowledge of high-probability pathways to ensure vulnerable children are protected.
Large Outbreak in northern Nigeria

TL;DR: It is estimated from the poliomyelitis case count and the paralytic case:infection ratio for type 2 56 wild poliovirus infections that ~700,000 cVDPV2 infections have occurred during the outbreak.
