TL;DR: The Zika virus genome was detected in amniotic fluid samples of two pregnant women in Brazil whose fetuses were diagnosed with microcephaly and results suggest that the virus can cross the placental barrier.

TL;DR: A comprehensive neuropathological study in ten newborn babies infected with ZIKV during pregnancy, including the spinal cords and dorsal root ganglia, and also muscle, pituitaries, eye, systemic organs, and placentas, indicates a developmental vulnerability of the immature CNS, and sheds light on possible mechanisms of brain injury of this newly recognized public health threat.

TL;DR: The results indicate that CZS is not a stochastic event and depends on NPC intrinsic susceptibility, possibly related to oligogenic and/or epigenetic mechanisms, and excludes a monogenic model to explain resistance or increased susceptibility.
