The global threat of antimicrobial resistance: science for intervention
Ignasi Roca,Murat Akova,Fernando Baquero,Jean Carlet,Marco Cavaleri,Samuel Coenen,Jonathan Cohen,David Findlay,Inge C. Gyssens,O. E. Heure,Gunnar Kahlmeter,H. Kruse,Ramanan Laxminarayan,Ernesto Liebana,Lorena López-Cerero,Alasdair P. MacGowan,Marta Martins,Jesús Rodríguez-Baño,Jean-Marc Rolain,Carlos Segovia,Betuel Sigaúque,E. Taconelli,Elizabeth M. H. Wellington,Jordi Vila +23 more
TL;DR: The views of the B-Debate participants regarding the current situation of antimicrobial resistance in animals and the food chain, within the community and the healthcare setting as well as the role of the environment and the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies are summarized, providing expert recommendations to tackle the global threat of antimacterial resistance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the tetracyclines including glycylcyclines
TL;DR: Though incompletely understood, the pharmacodynamic properties of the tetracyclines and glycylcyclines are summarized.
Journal ArticleDOI
EUCAST expert rules in antimicrobial susceptibility testing
Roland Leclercq,Rafael Cantón,Derek J. Brown,Christian G. Giske,P. Heisig,Alasdair P. MacGowan,Johan W. Mouton,Patrice Nordmann,Arne C. Rodloff,Gian Maria Rossolini,Claude-James Soussy,Martin Steinbakk,T.G. Winstanley,Gunnar Kahlmeter +13 more
TL;DR: The applicability of EUCAST expert rules depends on the MIC breakpoints used to define the rules, and setting appropriate clinical breakpoints, based on treating patients and not on the detection of resistance mechanisms, may lead to modification of some expert rules in the future.
Journal ArticleDOI
Development of the quinolones.
TL;DR: Manipulations of the basic molecule, including replacing hydrogen with fluorine at position 6, substituting a diamine residue at position 7 and adding new residues at position 1 of the quinolone ring, have led to enhanced antibacterial efficacy and improved breadth and potency of in vitro activity and pharmacokinetics.
Journal ArticleDOI
A modified population analysis profile (PAP) method to detect hetero-resistance to vancomycin in Staphylococcus aureus in a UK hospital
TL;DR: One hundred methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains, isolated between 1983 and 1999, were tested alongside the vancomycin hetero-resistant S. aUREus (hVRSA) strain Mu 3, and vancomYcin- resistant S.Aureus (VRSA] strain Mu 50, for their resistance to van comycin.
