This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. Complex network measures of brain connectivity: uses and interpretations.

Virtual machine (VM) consolidation is very popular in cloud computing systems for numerous reasons including improvement of resource utilization, saving of infrastructure costs and ease of management. However, consolidation also causes contention in virtualized environments such as causing to degradation of VM performance. In this paper, we present an effective consolidation system which is able to minimize performance degradation between consolidated VMs. In order to achieve this, we first investigate the relationship between physical resource contention and latency performance degradation for consolidated VMs by comparing VM performance in isolation and virtualization environments. Then, we focus on different existing schemes on the consolidation of VM performance optimization problems in virtualized environments. We attempt experimentally to find a better alternative method to minimize performance degradation and we notice that particle swarm optimization (PSO) has substantial potential. However, PSO must be improved to include redefining the operators and parameters to solve an optimization problem. Experimental evaluations on resource benchmarks using web service stacks, data-centric programming languages, Hadoop and JDK9 indicate that our system has attained encouraging result as compared to previous models.

Managing Performance Degradation of Collocated Virtual Machines in Private Cloud

The Cloud of Sensors (CoS) paradigm has emerged from the broader concept of Cloud of Things. CoS infrastructures have the potential to leverage the benefits of both Clouds and wireless sensor and actuator networks (WSAN). As traditional Cloud platforms, CoS are built on the virtualization principles. A major challenge in the development of CoS virtualization models is energy consumption, as sensors are well-known to be energy constrained. We claim that the design decisions for the specification of software artifacts composing a CoS must consider the energy efficiency as a primary requirement. Edge computing has recently raised as a paradigm to leverage computing and networking capabilities at the network edge thus, allowing a more decentralized design. In this paper, we investigate a new model that integrates cloud, edge, and WSANs in a CoS infrastructure and propose a novel three-tier system architecture. We describe an archetype that supports implementing a three-tier CoS system, fostering energy efficiency and sustainability. We also discuss issues on implementing the CoS as a real software system, running on top of FIWARE.

A Mean-Field Annealing Model for Task Scheduling in Multiprocessor Systems

Task scheduling is important for the proper functioning of parallel processor systems. The static scheduling of tasks onto networks of parallel processors is well defined and documented in the literature. However, in many practical situations, a priori information about the tasks that need to be scheduled is not available. In such situations tasks usually arrive dynamically and the scheduling should be performed online or "on the fly". We present a framework based on stochastic reinforcement learning which is usually used to solve optimization problems in a simple and efficient way. The use of reinforcement learning reduces the dynamic scheduling problem to that of learning a stochastic approximation of an unknown average error surface. The learning system develops an association between the best action (schedule) and the current state of the environment (parallel system).
