Oyster Reefs at Risk and Recommendations for Conservation, Restoration, and Management
Michael W. Beck,Robert D. Brumbaugh,Laura Airoldi,Alvar Carranza,Loren D. Coen,Christine Crawford,Omar Defeo,Graham J. Edgar,Boze Hancock,Matthew C. Kay,Hunter S. Lenihan,Mark W. Luckenbach,Caitlyn L. Toropova,Guofan Zhang,Ximing Guo +14 more
TL;DR: This article examined the condition of oyster reefs across 144 bays and 44 ecoregions and found that more than 90% of them have been lost in bays (70%) and ecoregs (63%).
Journal ArticleDOI
Marine biodiversity in the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of South America: knowledge and gaps.
Patricia Miloslavich,Eduardo Klein,Juan Manuel Díaz,Cristián E. Hernández,Gregorio Bigatti,Lúcia S. Campos,Felipe Artigas,Julio Castillo,Pablo E. Penchaszadeh,Paula E. Piriz,Diego Rodríguez,Yocie Yoneshigue-Valentin,Luiz Antonio Pierantoni Gamboa,Alberto Martín +20 more
TL;DR: This paper analyzes the status of knowledge of marine biodiversity in five subregions along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of South America: the Tropical East Pacific, the Humboldt Current, the Patagonian Shelf, the Brazilian Shelves, and the Tropical West Atlantic, and it provides a review of ecosystem threats and regional marine conservation strategies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mussels as ecosystem engineers: Their contribution to species richness in a rocky littoral community
TL;DR: Evidence indicates that the mussel beds studied here were important in maintaining species richness at the landscape-level, and highlights that beds of shelled bivalves should not be neglected as conservation targets in marine benthic environments.

Shellfish reefs at risk: A global analysis of problems and solutions
Michael W. Beck,Robert D. Brumbaugh,Laura Airoldi,Alvar Carranza,Loren D. Coen,Christine Crawford,Omar Defeo,Graham J. Edgar,Boze Hancock,Matthew C. Kay,Hunter S. Lenihan,Mark W. Luckenbach,C.L. Toropova,G. Zhang +13 more
Journal ArticleDOI
Pelagic longlines: A threat to sea turtles in the Equatorial Eastern Atlantic
TL;DR: Due to the high rate of sea turtle by-catch observed off the The Gulf of Guinea, conservation programs in the area should take into consideration the possible existence of a developmental and feeding area in this zone and mitigation measures put in place to avoid or minimize damage to the pelagic phase of African populations of sea turtles.
