Assessment of landslide hazards induced by extreme rainfall event in Jammu and Kashmir Himalaya, northwest India
Amit Kumar,A. K. L. Asthana,Rao Singh Priyanka,Rao Singh Priyanka,R. Jayangondaperumal,Anil K. Gupta,Anil K. Gupta,S. S. Bhakuni +7 more
TL;DR: In this paper, detailed geological, meteorological, and remote sensing investigations have been carried out on an extreme rainfall landslide event that occurred in Sadal village, Udhampur district, Jammu and Kashmir Himalaya, during September 2014.
Journal ArticleDOI
Particle size characteristics of suspended sediment transported in meltwater from the Gangotri Glacier, central Himalaya — An indicator of subglacial sediment evacuation
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined particle size transported in the proglacial meltwater stream of Gangotri Glacier for seven consecutive melt seasons (May-October, 2000-2006) in order to provide information on (i) temporal variations in the particle size distribution, (ii) texture and mineralogy of the sediments, and (iii) origin and evacuation pattern.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ice-dams, outburst floods, and movement heterogeneity of glaciers, Karakoram
Rakesh Bhambri,Kenneth Hewitt,Prashant Kawishwar,Amit Kumar,Akshaya Verma,Snehmani,Sameer K. Tiwari,Anshuman Misra +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the most frequent, large glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) come from local clusters of glaciers in five sub-basins, given special attention here.
Journal ArticleDOI
The hazardous 2017-2019 surge and river damming by Shispare Glacier, Karakoram
Rakesh Bhambri,C. Scott Watson,C. Scott Watson,Kenneth Hewitt,Umesh K. Haritashya,Jeffrey S. Kargel,Arjun Pratap Shahi,Pritam Chand,Amit Kumar,Akshaya Verma,Himanshu Govil +10 more
TL;DR: The recent active phase of Shispare surge began in April 2018, showed two surface flow maxima in June 2018 and May 2019, and terminated following a GLOF on 22–23 June 2019, probably because increased meltwater restored efficient channelized flow.
Journal ArticleDOI
Tracing isotopic signatures (δD and δ18O) in precipitation and glacier melt over Chorabari Glacier–Hydroclimatic inferences for the Upper Ganga Basin (UGB), Garhwal Himalaya
TL;DR: In this paper, the role of summer and winter precipitation on glacier melt using stable isotopes (δD, δ18O) coupled with existing hydrometeorological observations during the glacier ablation season (June-September) for the years 2011-2012.
