Restructuring of the 'Macaronesia' biogeographic unit: A marine multi-taxon biogeographical approach.
Rui Freitas,Rui Freitas,Maria M. Romeiras,Maria M. Romeiras,Luís Silva,Ricardo Cordeiro,Patrícia Madeira,José A. González,Peter Wirtz,J.M. Falcón,Alberto Brito,Sergio R. Floeter,Pedro Afonso,Filipe M. Porteiro,María Ascensión Viera-Rodríguez,Ana I. Neto,Ana I. Neto,Ricardo Haroun,João N.M. Farminhão,Ana C. Rebelo,Ana C. Rebelo,Lara Baptista,Lara Baptista,Carlos S. Melo,Carlos S. Melo,Alejandro Martínez,Jorge Núñez,Björn Berning,Markes E. Johnson,Sérgio P. Ávila,Sérgio P. Ávila +30 more
TL;DR: All marine groups studied suggest the exclusion of Cabo Verde from the remaining Macaronesian archipelagos and thus, CaboVerde should be given the status of a biogeographic subprovince within the West African Transition province.
Journal ArticleDOI
Depositional processes on oceanic island shelves – Evidence from storm‐generated Neogene deposits from the mid‐North Atlantic
Ricardo Piazza Meireles,Rui Quartau,Ricardo S. Ramalho,Ana C. Rebelo,José Madeira,Vittorio Zanon,Sérgio P. Ávila +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a sequence of Neogene tempestite deposits was incorporated in the island edifice by the ongoing volcanic activity and later exposed through uplift and erosion, and the water depth at the time of deposition could be inferred, constituting an excellent case study to gain insight on the still enigmatic processes of insular shelf deposition.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mass extinctions in the Azores during the last glaciation: fact or myth
Sérgio P. Ávila,Patrícia Madeira,Nuno Mendes,Ana C. Rebelo,André Medeiros,Cidalina Gomes,Francisco García-Talavera,Carlos Marques da Silva,Mário Cachão,Claude Hillaire-Marcel,António M. de Frias Martins +10 more
TL;DR: The influence of the last glaciation on the shallow-water marine malacofauna of the Azores Islands is reviewed in this article, where the authors compare the fossil mollusc fauna of Prainha, Praia do Calhau and Lagoinhas Pleistocene outcrops with the recent mollus species of Azores islands, and find no evidence supporting the hypothesis that most of the marine organisms now present in these islands recolonized the islands after the last glacial maximum.
Journal ArticleDOI
A review of the MIS 5e highstand deposits from Santa Maria Island (Azores, NE Atlantic): Palaeobiodiversity, palaeoecology and palaeobiogeography
Sérgio P. Ávila,Carlos S. Melo,Luís Silva,Ricardo S. Ramalho,Rui Quartau,Ana Hipólito,Ricardo Cordeiro,Ana C. Rebelo,Patrícia Madeira,Alessio Rovere,Alessio Rovere,Paul J. Hearty,Diamantino Henriques,Carlos Marques da Silva,António M. de Frias Martins,Caridad Zazo +15 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a comprehensive review of the biota living in the mid North Atlantic during the late Neogene and the Quaternary is presented, focusing on the MIS 5e fossil record of the Azores archipelago.
Journal ArticleDOI
Palaeoecology, taphonomy, and preservation of a lower Pliocene shell bed (coquina) from a volcanic oceanic island (Santa Maria Island, Azores)
Sérgio P. Ávila,Ricardo S. Ramalho,Jörg M. Habermann,Rui Quartau,Rui Quartau,Andreas Kroh,Björn Berning,Markes E. Johnson,Michael Xavier Kirby,Vittorio Zanon,Jürgen Titschack,A. R. Goss,Ana C. Rebelo,Carlos S. Melo,Patrícia Madeira,Ricardo Cordeiro,Ricardo Piazza Meireles,Leila Bagaço,Ana Hipólito,Alfred Uchman,Carlos Marques da Silva,Mário Cachão,José Madeira +22 more
TL;DR: In this article, a detailed analysis regarding a 10-m-thick bivalve-dominated fossil assemblage exposed at Pedra-que-pica on Santa Maria Island in the Azores is presented.
