Journal ArticleDOI
rworldmap: A New R package for Mapping Global Data
TL;DR: Rworldmap is a relatively new package available on CRAN for the mapping and visualisation of global data that builds on the functionality of existing packages, particularly sp, maptools and fields.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ecosystem-based marine spatial management: Review of concepts, policies, tools, and critical issues
Stelios Katsanevakis,Vanessa Stelzenmüller,Andy South,Thomas Kirk Sørensen,Peter J.S. Jones,Sandy Kerr,Fabio Badalamenti,Christos Anagnostou,Patricia Breen,Guillem Chust,Giovanni D’Anna,Michael Duijn,Tatiana Filatova,Fabio Fiorentino,Helena Hulsman,Kate R. Johnson,Aristomenis P. Karageorgis,Ingrid Kröncke,Simone Mirto,Carlo Pipitone,Susan Portelli,Wanfei Qiu,Henning Reiss,Dimitris Sakellariou,Maria Salomidi,Luc van Hoof,Vassiliki Vassilopoulou,Tomás Vega Fernández,Sandra Vöge,Anke Weber,Argyro Zenetos,Remment ter Hofstede +31 more
TL;DR: Ecosystem based marine spatial management (EB-MSM) is an approach that recognizes the full array of interactions within an ecosystem, including human uses, rather than considering single issues, species, or ecosystem services in isolation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Are kernels the mustard? Data from global positioning system (GPS) collars suggests problems for kernel home- range analyses with least-squares cross-validation
Graham Hemson,Paul J. Johnson,Andy South,Robert E. Kenward,Ruth M. Ripley,David W. Macdonald +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the performance of least squares cross-validated kernel-density estimation (LSCV KDE) was evaluated using data from GPS-collared lions subsampled to simulate the effects of hypothetical radio-tracking strategies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Developing reliable, repeatable, and accessible methods to provide high-resolution estimates of fishing-effort distributions from vessel monitoring system (VMS) data
TL;DR: The proposed method for VMS analysis involves removing duplicate VMS records and records close to ports, calculating the time interval between successive records to identify periods of activity, linking each record to a vessel and gear type, differentiating fishing and non-fishing activity, and summing fishing records in time and space to estimate fishing effort.
Journal ArticleDOI
Predicting the distributions of marine organisms at the global scale
Jonathan Stuart Ready,Kristin Kaschner,Andy South,Paul D. Eastwood,Tony Rees,Josephine Rius,Eli Agbayani,Sven O. Kullander,Rainer Froese +8 more
TL;DR: AquaMaps outputs compare well to the existing methods tested, and inclusion of expert knowledge results in a general improvement in model outputs, which are proposed as additional benefits for public and research use alike.
