Shock ignition: a brief overview and progress in the design of robust targets
TL;DR: In this article, Atzeni et al. proposed a safety factor for high gain, ITF* (analogous to the ignition threshold factor ITF introduced by Clark et al (2008 Phys. Rev. Lett. 104 135002), which is evaluated by means of parametric 1D simulations with artificially reduced reactivity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Preliminary results from recent experiments and future roadmap to Shock Ignition of Fusion Targets
Dimitri Batani,Dimitri Batani,G. Malka,Guy Schurtz,Xavier Ribeyre,E. LeBel,L. Giuffrida,Vladimir Tikhonchuk,Luca Volpe,A Patria,Petra Koester,L. Labate,L. A. Gizzi,Luca Antonelli,Maria Richetta,J. Badziak,T Pysarcizck,Marcin Rosinski,Zofia Kalinowska,Tomasz Chodukowski +38 more
TL;DR: In this paper, an experiment performed using the PALS iodine laser to study laser-target coupling and laser-plasma interaction in an intensity regime relevant for SI was described. But the experiment was performed in an inertial confinement fusion (ICF) setting.
Journal ArticleDOI
Illumination stability for high-repetition-rate laser facilities in direct-drive inertial confinement fusion
TL;DR: In this paper, the illumination uniformity of a spherical target is studied using numerical calculations, taking into account target positioning errors and laser system shot-to-shot fluctuations, and it is found that the fluctuation of the illumination asymmetry is a key parameter for assessing the stability of operation in high-repetition-rate mode.
Journal ArticleDOI
Detection of Interfractional Morphological Changes in Proton Therapy: A Simulation and In Vivo Study With the INSIDE In-Beam PET
Elisa Fiorina,Veronica Ferrero,Guido Baroni,Giuseppe Battistoni,Nicola Belcari,Niccolò Camarlinghi,Piergiorgio Cerello,Mario Ciocca,Micol De Simoni,Marco Donetti,Y. Dong,A. Embriaco,M. TL;DR: In this article, an effective and robust analysis to detect regions with a significant range discrepancy is proposed, which relies on in-vivo treatment verification by means of in-beam Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and was carried out with the INSIDE system installed at the National Centre of Oncological Hadrontherapy (CNAO) in Pavia, which is under clinical testing since July 2019.
Proceedings ArticleDOI
HiPER laser: from capsule design to the laser reference design
B. J. Le Garrec,Stefano Atzeni,Dimitri Batani,La Gizzi,Xavier Ribeyre,Guy Schurtz,Angelo Schiavi,Klaus Ertel,John R. Collier,Christopher J Edwards,M. Perlado,J. J. Honrubia,Bedřich Rus +12 more
TL;DR: HiPER (High Power laser Energy Research) is the first European plan for international cooperation in developing inertial fusion energy as mentioned in this paper, and the first ignition experiments are underway at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) in the USA.
