Journal ArticleDOI

Shock ignition: a brief overview and progress in the design of robust targets

TL;DR: In this article, Atzeni et al. proposed a safety factor for high gain, ITF* (analogous to the ignition threshold factor ITF introduced by Clark et al (2008 Phys. Rev. Lett. 104 135002), which is evaluated by means of parametric 1D simulations with artificially reduced reactivity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Illumination stability for high-repetition-rate laser facilities in direct-drive inertial confinement fusion

TL;DR: In this paper, the illumination uniformity of a spherical target is studied using numerical calculations, taking into account target positioning errors and laser system shot-to-shot fluctuations, and it is found that the fluctuation of the illumination asymmetry is a key parameter for assessing the stability of operation in high-repetition-rate mode.
Proceedings ArticleDOI

HiPER laser: from capsule design to the laser reference design

TL;DR: HiPER (High Power laser Energy Research) is the first European plan for international cooperation in developing inertial fusion energy as mentioned in this paper, and the first ignition experiments are underway at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) in the USA.
