Journal ArticleDOI
Elevated levels of circulating cachectin/tumor necrosis factor in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome☆
Juhani Lähdevirta,Juhani Lähdevirta,C. P. J. Maury,C. P. J. Maury,Anna-Maija Teppo,Anna-Maija Teppo,Heikki Repo,Heikki Repo +7 more
TL;DR: Since cachectin/TNF suppresses lipoprotein lipase in adipocytes in vitro, and causes weight loss under experimental conditions, the findings of raised levels of cachect in patients with AIDS may have relevance to the pathogenesis of cachexia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Insulin resistance, hypertension and microalbuminuria in patients with Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus
Leif Groop,Agneta Ekstrand,Carol Forsblom,E. Widen,P.-H. Groop,Anna-Maija Teppo,Johan G. Eriksson +6 more
TL;DR: Insulin resistance in Type 2 diabetes is predominantly associated with either hypertension or microalbuminuria or with both, and the highest triglyceride and lowest HDL cholesterol concentrations were observed in Type 1 diabetic patients with both hypertension and micro Albuminuria.
Journal ArticleDOI
Growth of Chlamydia pneumoniae in cultured human peripheral blood mononuclear cells and induction of a cytokine response
Suvi-Sirkku E. Kaukoranta-Tolvanen,Anna-Maija Teppo,Kirsi Laitinen,Pekka Saikku,Kimmo Linnavuori,Maija Leinonen +5 more
TL;DR: In vitro infection of freshly isolated human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (HPBMC) with Chlamydia pneumoniae was found to induce a production of tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1beta), interLEukin -6 ( IL-6) and interferon alpha (IFN-alpha).
Journal ArticleDOI
Tumor necrosis factor in the serum of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.
C. P. Y. Maury,Anna-Maija Teppo +1 more
TL;DR: Results show that SLE in humans is not associated with a depressed level of circulating TNF, and that in SLE patients with infection, the level of TNF in the circulation increases in a manner similar to that in other subjects.
Journal ArticleDOI
Risk factors for mortality in Type II (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes: evidence of a role for neuropathy and a protective effect of HLA-DR4.
Carol Forsblom,Timo Sane,Per-Henrik Groop,K. J. Tötterman,Milla Kallio,Carola Saloranta,Leena Laasonen,Paula Summanen,Mauri Lepäntalo,Leila Laatikainen,E. Matikainen,Anna-Maija Teppo,Saija Koskimies,Leif Groop +13 more
TL;DR: In addition to coexisting macroangiopathy, increased albumin excretion rate, poor glycaemic control and neuropathy are risk factors for cardiovascular mortality in patients with Type II diabetes.
