Journal ArticleDOI
Imaging of neutral lipids by oil red O for analyzing the metabolic status in health and disease
TL;DR: A protocol that detects neutral lipids and lipid droplet (LD) morphology by oil red O (ORO) staining of sections from frozen tissues is presented, allowing for easy estimation of tissue lipid content and distribution using only basic laboratory and computer equipment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Vascular endothelial growth factor B controls endothelial fatty acid uptake
Carolina E. Hagberg,Annelie Falkevall,Annelie Falkevall,Xun Wang,Xun Wang,Erik Larsson,Jenni Huusko,Ingrid Nilsson,Laurens A. van Meeteren,Erik Samén,Erik Samén,Li Lu,Maarten Vanwildemeersch,Maarten Vanwildemeersch,Joakim Klar,Joakim Klar,Guillem Genové,Kristian Pietras,Kristian Pietras,Sharon Stone-Elander,Sharon Stone-Elander,Lena Claesson-Welsh,Seppo Ylä-Herttuala,Per Lindahl,Per Lindahl,Ulf Eriksson,Ulf Eriksson +26 more
TL;DR: It is shown that VEGF-B has an unexpected role in endothelial targeting of lipids to peripheral tissues, and may open up the possibility for novel strategies to modulate pathological lipid accumulation in diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI
Targeting VEGF-B as a novel treatment for insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes
Carolina E. Hagberg,Annika Mehlem,Annelie Falkevall,Annelie Falkevall,Lars Muhl,Lars Muhl,Barbara C Fam,Henrik Ortsäter,Pierre Scotney,Daniel Nyqvist,Erik Samén,Erik Samén,Li Lu,Sharon Stone-Elander,Sharon Stone-Elander,Joseph Proietto,Sofianos Andrikopoulos,Åke Sjöholm,Andrew D. Nash,Ulf Eriksson +19 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the vascular endothelium can function as an efficient barrier to excess muscle lipid uptake even under conditions of severe obesity and type 2 diabetes, and that this barrier can be maintained by inhibition of VEGF-B signalling.
Journal Article
Targeting VEGF-B as a novel treatment for insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes
Carolina E. Hagberg,Annika Mehlem,Annelie Falkevall,Lars Muhl,Barbara C Fam,Henrik Ortsäter,Pierre Scotney,Daniel Nyqvist,Erik Samén,Li Lu,Sharon Stone-Elander,Joseph Proietto,Sofianos Andrikopoulos,Åke Sjöholm,Andrew D. Nash,Ulf Eriksson +15 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed VEGF-B antagonism as a novel pharmacological approach for type 2 diabetes, targeting the lipidtransport properties of the endothelium to improve muscle insulin sensitivity and glucose disposal.
Journal ArticleDOI
Degradation of the Amyloid β-Protein by the Novel Mitochondrial Peptidasome, PreP *♦
Annelie Falkevall,Nyosha Alikhani,Shashi Bhushan,Pavel F. Pavlov,Katrin Busch,Kenneth A. Johnson,Therese Eneqvist,Lars O. Tjernberg,Maria Ankarcrona,Elzbieta Glaser +9 more
TL;DR: The human PreP homologue, hPreP, is identified and characterized, and its capacity to degrade the amyloid β-protein (Aβ) in brain mitochondria is shown, and Molecular modeling of h presequence peptidase allowed us to identify Cys90 and Cys527 that form disulfide bridges under oxidized conditions and might be involved in redox regulation of the enzyme.
