Pattern formation in unstable thin liquid films

TL;DR: In this paper, the problem of spontaneous evolution of morphological patterns in thin unstable liquid films on homogeneous solid substrates is resolved based on a 3D nonlinear equation of motion.
Journal ArticleDOI

Instability of thin polymer films on coated substrates : Rupture, dewetting, and drop formation

TL;DR: In this article, a direct comparison of theoretical predictions and experimental results on instabilities and various stages of dewetting of thin polystyrene films, prepared on silicon wafers with three different nanosized (∼1 nm) coatings, dewet spontaneously above the glass transition temperature by the growth of cylindrical holes with wavy rims.
Journal ArticleDOI

Instability and morphology of thin liquid films on chemically heterogeneous substrates

TL;DR: Heterogeneities can even destabilize spinodally stable films, reduce the time of rupture substantially for thicker films, and produce complex and locally ordered morphological features that are not predicted by the spinodal mechanism.
Journal ArticleDOI

Thin film instability induced by long-range forces

TL;DR: In this paper, the temporal evolution of different morphologies of unstable thin liquid polymer films caused by destabilizing intermolecular forces is presented. But their importance is largely neglected because directly at a surface or at an interface they are mostly weak compared with specific interaction of short range.
