Journal ArticleDOI
BCG-Induced Cross-Protection and Development of Trained Immunity: Implication for Vaccine Design
Camila Covián,Camila Covián,Ayleen Fernández-Fierro,Angello Retamal-Díaz,Fabián E. Díaz,Abel E. Vasquez,Margarita K. Lay,Margarita K. Lay,Claudia A. Riedel,Pablo A. González,Susan M. Bueno,Alexis M. Kalergis +11 more
TL;DR: BCG-induced cross-protection and acquisition of trained immunity and potential heterologous effects of recombinant BCG vaccines are discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Naturally Derived Heme-Oxygenase 1 Inducers and Their Therapeutic Application to Immune-Mediated Diseases.
Samanta C. Funes,Mariana Ríos,Ayleen Fernández-Fierro,Camila Covián,Susan M. Bueno,Claudia A. Riedel,Juan Pablo Mackern-Oberti,Juan Pablo Mackern-Oberti,Alexis M. Kalergis +8 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that the use of some compounds from natural sources able to induce HO-1 is an attractive lifestyle toward promoting human health and opens a new outlook on the investigation of naturally derivedHO-1 inducers, mainly concerning autoimmunity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Tolerogenic dendritic cell transfer ameliorates systemic lupus erythematosus in mice.
Samanta C. Funes,Mariana Ríos,Felipe Gómez-Santander,Ayleen Fernández-Fierro,María J. Altamirano-Lagos,Daniela Rivera-Pérez,Raul Pulgar-Sepúlveda,Evelyn L. Jara,Diego Rebolledo-Zelada,Alejandra Villarroel,Juan Carlos Roa,Juan Pablo Mackern-Oberti,Juan Pablo Mackern-Oberti,Alexis M. Kalergis +13 more
TL;DR: The clinical relevance of tolDC generation with CoPP, dexamethasone and rosiglitazone and the use of these modified cells as a therapy for systemic autoimmunity is strengthened.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lung pathology due to hRSV infection impairs blood–brain barrier permeability enabling astrocyte infection and a long-lasting inflammation in the CNS
Karen Bohmwald,Jorge A. Soto,Catalina Andrade-Parra,Ayleen Fernández-Fierro,Janyra A. Espinoza,Mariana Ríos,Eliseo A. Eugenin,Pablo A. González,Maria Cecilia Opazo,Claudia A. Riedel,Alexis M. Kalergis +10 more
TL;DR: It is found that hRSV infection alters the permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in mice, allowing the trespassing of macromolecules and immune cells and leading to increased infiltration of immune cells into the CNS together with an increased expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the brain.
Journal ArticleDOI
Immune Modulation by Inhibitors of the HO System
Ayleen Fernández-Fierro,Samanta C. Funes,Mariana Ríos,Camila Covián,Jorge González,Alexis M. Kalergis +5 more
TL;DR: The heme oxygenase (HO) system involves three isoforms of this enzyme, HO-1,HO-2, and HO-3 as discussed by the authors, which display the same catalytic activity, oxidating the heme group to produce biliverdin, ferrous iron, and carbon monoxide (CO).
