Journal ArticleDOI
Mechanisms of respiratory sinus arrhythmia in patients with mild heart failure.
TL;DR: The results indicate that the HF component can significantly overestimate cardiac vagal responsiveness in patients with mild chronic heart failure and this bias is improved by controlled breathing, since this maneuver increases the vagal contribution to HF without affecting its nonneural component.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of mild physical activity, atenolol and the combination on ambulatory blood pressure in hypertensive subjects.
Alberto Radaelli,Massimo F Piepoli,Stamatis Adamopoulos,Athanasio Pipilis,Susan J. Clark,Barbara Casadei,Theo E. Meyer,Andrew J.S. Coats +7 more
TL;DR: Atenolol did not enhance the effect of physical training upon blood pressure and had little if any effect upon the training-induced increase in exercise tolerance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sympathetic activation increases NO release from eNOS but neither eNOS nor nNOS play an essential role in exercise hyperemia in the human forearm.
Husain Shabeeh,Michael Seddon,Sally Brett,Narbeh Melikian,Barbara Casadei,Ajay M. Shah,Phil Chowienczyk +6 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that sympathetic activation increases NO release from eNOS, attenuating vasoconstriction, even in the presence of increased sympathetic activation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Improving public health by improving clinical trial guidelines and their application.
Martin J Landray,J.J. Bax,L Alliot,Marc Buyse,Marc Buyse,A Cohen,Rory Collins,Gerd Hindricks,Stefan James,S Lane,Aldo P. Maggioni,Ann Meeker-O’Connell,G Olsson,Stuart J. Pocock,M Rawlins,Jonathan Sellors,K Shinagawa,Karin R. Sipido,Liam Smeeth,R Stephens,M W Stewart,W G Stough,Fergus Sweeney,F. Van de Werf,K Woods,Barbara Casadei +25 more
TL;DR: This paper summarizes the key insights and discussions from the workshop, highlights subsequent progress, and identifies next steps to produce meaningful change in the conduct of cardiovascular clinical research.
Journal ArticleDOI
Regulation of β-adrenergic control of heart rate by GTP-cyclohydrolase 1 (GCH1) and tetrahydrobiopterin
David Adlam,Neil Herring,Gillian Douglas,J de Bono,Dan Li,E. J. F. Danson,Amy L. Tatham,Lu C-J.,Katie A. Jennings,Stephanie J. Cragg,Barbara Casadei,David J. Paterson,Keith M. Channon +12 more
TL;DR: Reduced GCH1 expression and BH4 deficiency cause tachycardia through enhanced β-adrenergic sensitivity, with no effect on vagal function, and are novel determinants of cardiac autonomic regulation that may have important roles in cardiovascular pathophysiology.
