Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. In simulations of developing fires in enclosures, a correct prediction of flame spread is crucial in the prediction of the fire growth rate. The simulation of this phenomenon requires two different kinds of solvers: one that deals with the solid phase, to determine the thermal degradation and volatile release (pyrolysis); a second one that calculates the combustion process in the flame formed by mixing of the volatiles with the ambient air. The processes in the solid and the gas phase require proper modeling. Moreover, an adequate coupling strategy at the interface between the solid and the gas phase is an important point of interest. The paper focuses on a method to successfully combine these two types of calculations. Two types of flame spread (upward and downward) demonstrate the possibilities of this approach. We conclude that the coupling between the two phases works fine, providing a mechanism of simulating flame spread with two different codes. It is found, however, that the prediction of the gas phase requires an appropriate choice of the CFD sub-models, particularly in case of upward flame spread. The impact of different turbulence models illustrates that totally different flame dynamics can be predicted.

Simulations of upward flame spread by coupling a pyrolysis model with a cfd calculation

This work concerns numerical simulations of auto-ignition of hydrogen, diluted with nitrogen, in a co-flow of heated air, with conditions as in the experiment of Markides and Mastorakos [1]. Numerical simulations are performed with the Conditional Moment Closure model [2]. Combustion is at atmospheric pressure. In studies of auto-ignition phenomena, the use of detailed chemical mechanisms is important. We focus on the low temperature non-premixed auto-ignition behaviour of five different chemical mechanisms: Yetter et al [3], Mueller et al [4], Li et al [5], O'Conaire et al [6] and Konnov [7]. The temperature of the air stream (945K- 1100K) is higher than the temperature of the fuel stream (650-930K). The effect of the coflow temperature, the fuel temperature, the conditional scalar dissipation rate and the resolution in mixture fraction space is investigated. With respect to the conditional scalar dissipation rate, we discuss the Amplitude Mapping Closure (AMC) model [8]. We compare to results when a constant scalar dissipation rate is applied over the entire mixture fraction range.

Application of BEM and analysis of the role of radiation effects in labscale turbulent diffusion flames.

To accomplish more valuable and more accurate video fire detection, this paper points out future directions and discusses first steps which are now being taken to improve the vision-based detection of smoke and flames. First, an overview is given of the state-of-the-art detection methods in the visible and infrared spectral range. Then, a novel multi-sensor smoke and flame detector is proposed which combines the multimodal information of low-cost visual and thermal infrared detection results. Experiments on fire and nonfire multi-sensor sequences indicate that the combined detector yields more accurate results, with fewer false alarms, than either detector alone. Next, a framework for multi-view fire analysis is discussed to overcome the lack in a video-based fire analysis tool and to detect valuable fire characteristics at the early stage of the fire. As prior experimental results show, this combined analysis from different viewpoints provides more valuable fire characteristics. Information about 3-D fire location, size and growth rate can be extracted from the video data in practically no time. Finally, directions towards standardized evaluation and video-driven fire forecasting are suggested.
