Global challenges for seagrass conservation
Richard K. F. Unsworth,Richard K. F. Unsworth,Len J. McKenzie,Catherine J. Collier,Leanne C. Cullen-Unsworth,Carlos M. Duarte,Johan S. Eklöf,Jessie C. Jarvis,Benjamin L. Jones,Lina Mtwana Nordlund +9 more
TL;DR: The seagrass conservation community is urged to engage stakeholders from local resource users to international policy-makers to address the challenges outlined here, in order to secure the future of the world’s seagRass ecosystems and maintain the vital services which they supply.
Journal ArticleDOI
The global distribution of seagrass meadows
Leonard McKenzie,Lina Mtwana Nordlund,Benjamin L. Jones,Benjamin L. Jones,Leanne C. Cullen-Unsworth,Chris Roelfsema,Richard K. F. Unsworth,Richard K. F. Unsworth +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the global seagrass area to date has been estimated as 160,387 km2, but possibly 266,562 km2 with lower confidence, by rationalising and updating a range of existing datasets.
Journal ArticleDOI
Indonesia's globally significant seagrass meadows are under widespread threat
Richard K. F. Unsworth,Rohani Ambo-Rappe,Benjamin L. Jones,Yayu A. La Nafie,Andri Irawan,Udhi E. Hernawan,Abigail Moore,Leanne C. Cullen-Unsworth +7 more
TL;DR: Evidence from expert opinions is presented as to the state of Indonesia's seagrass ecosystems, their support for ecosystem services, with a focus on fisheries, and the damaging activities that threaten their existence.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rocking the Boat: Damage to Eelgrass by Swinging Boat Moorings
Richard K. F. Unsworth,Richard K. F. Unsworth,Beth Williams,Benjamin L. Jones,Leanne C. Cullen-Unsworth +4 more
TL;DR: Examining swinging chain boat moorings in seagrass meadows across a range of sites in the United Kingdom finds conclusive evidence from multiple sites that Z. marina is damaged by swinging chain mooring leading to a loss of at least 6 ha of United Kingdom seagRass.
Journal ArticleDOI
The perilous state of seagrass in the British Isles.
TL;DR: This study provides the first strong quantitative evidence that seagrass meadows of the British Isles are mostly in poor condition in comparison with global averages, with tissue nitrogen levels 75% higher than global values.
