Short Physical Performance Battery and all-cause mortality: systematic review and meta-analysis
Rita Pavasini,Jack M. Guralnik,Justin C. Brown,Mauro Di Bari,Matteo Cesari,Francesco Landi,Bert Vaes,Bert Vaes,Delphine Legrand,Joe Verghese,Cuiling Wang,Sari Stenholm,Luigi Ferrucci,Jennifer C. Lai,Anna Arnau Bartes,Joan Espaulella,Montserrat Ferrer,Jae Young Lim,Kristine E. Ensrud,Peggy M. Cawthon,Anna V. Turusheva,Elena V. Frolova,Yves Rolland,Valerie Lauwers,Andrea Corsonello,Gregory D. Kirk,Roberto Ferrari,Stefano Volpato,Gianluca Campo +28 more
TL;DR: The association between poor performance on SPPB and all-cause mortality remained highly consistent independent of follow-up length, subsets of participants, geographic area, and age of the population.
Journal ArticleDOI
Muscle strength and physical performance as predictors of mortality, hospitalization, and disability in the oldest old
Delphine Legrand,Bert Vaes,Bert Vaes,Catharina Matheï,Catharina Matheï,Wim Adriaensen,Wim Adriaensen,Gijs Van Pottelbergh,Gijs Van Pottelbergh,Jean-Marie Degryse,Jean-Marie Degryse +10 more
TL;DR: The predictive value of muscle strength and physical performance in the oldest old for all‐cause mortality; hospitalization; and the onset of disability, defined as a decline in activities of daily living, is evaluated independent of muscle mass, inflammatory markers, and comorbidities.
Journal ArticleDOI
The prevalence of sarcopenia in very old individuals according to the European consensus definition: insights from the BELFRAIL study
TL;DR: In a population-based sample of the very old the prevalence of sarcopenia according to the EWGSOP algorithm is similar to the prevalence with SMI as a single criterion, and a large number of participants with a sufficient SMI value showed low muscle strength and/or a poor SPPBm score.
Journal ArticleDOI
Too many, too few, or too unsafe? Impact of inappropriate prescribing on mortality, and hospitalization in a cohort of community-dwelling oldest old.
Maarten Wauters,Monique Elseviers,Bert Vaes,Bert Vaes,Jean-Marie Degryse,Jean-Marie Degryse,Olivia Dalleur,Olivia Dalleur,Robert Vander Stichele,Thierry Christiaens,Majda Azermai +10 more
TL;DR: Surprisingly, underuse and not misuse had strong associations with mortality and hospitalization in adults, aged 80 years and older.
Journal ArticleDOI
The BELFRAIL (BFC80+) study: a population-based prospective cohort study of the very elderly in Belgium
Bert Vaes,Agnes Pasquet,Pierre Wallemacq,Nawel Rezzoug,Hassan Mekouar,Pierre-Alexandre Olivier,Delphine Legrand,Catharina Matheï,Catharina Matheï,Gijs Van Pottelbergh,Gijs Van Pottelbergh,Jean-Marie Degryse,Jean-Marie Degryse +12 more
TL;DR: The BFC80+ was designed to acquire a better understanding of the epidemiology and pathophysiology of chronic diseases in the very elderly and to study the dynamic interaction between health, frailty and disability in a multi-system approach.
