Populism and the Crisis of Democracy : Volume 1: Concepts and Theory

I 1999 an article appeared in Commentary by Julius Reid Weiner claiming that Edward Said grew up in a wealthy household in Cairo and denying that Said’s family was driven out of Jerusalem by Jewish forces with the creation of the Israeli state. Said has so far not sought to sue and, since Said has an unresponsive form of leukaemia, he has more important questions to answer. This personal memoir of his early life is therefore timely as a reflection on his exilic status, an exploration of his relationship to both Palestinian and American culture, and an affirmation of his place in contemporary Palestinian politics and history. The facts of his life are, on the surface, conventional. Edward W. Said is the Parr University Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University. Born in Jerusalem in 1935, his family became refugees from Palestine in 1948. He grew up in Egypt, where he spent his youth in British schools, Lebanon, Jordan and the United States. He received his BA from Princeton and his MA and PhD from Harvard where he won the Bowdoin Prize. His doctoral thesis was on the literature of Joseph Conrad, a figure who has remained influential in Said’s later research on racism and colonialism. At Princeton he came under the influence of Richard P. Blackmur, one of the leading New Critics. From the 1960s Said became increasingly connected with and involved in Palestinian political struggles. In 1969 and 1970 he visited Amman and Beirut, re-establishing contacts with relatives like Kamal Nasser, poet and spokesperson for the PLO until 1973.
