It was shown previously that adsorption of ions at the electrical double layer of a high specific surface area carbon electrode can serve for water desalination. This is effected by assembling two such electrodes in a cell, cycling electronic charge between them and applying periodic synchronous pumping of the liquid through the cell. This process has been termed Electrochemical Parametric Pumping (ECPP). In the present article, modified charge coordinates, desalting efficiencies, isopotentiograms (analogous to adsorption isotherms) and optimization considerations of the two adsorptive electrode batch unit of the ECPP were derived and analysed on the basis of the propterties of each single electrode separately.

An improved adsorbent composition for a natural gas-fired, adsorption cooling system that readily adsorbs moisture from ambient air, while being readily regenerated at high temperatures up to 200-300 °C in order to provide an enhanced coefficient of performance to the system. Such an adsorbent composition may comprise an A-type zeolite, an X-type zeolite or a chemically modified Y-type zeolite either alone, in conjunction with each other or in conjunction with alumina and/or silica gel. A rotating adsorbent wheel may be fashioned from corrugated paper comprising the adsorbent composition and a slurry of synthetic, organic fibers which are preferably polyaramid fibers. The strength of the wheel may be enhanced by surface treating it with sols or salt solutions of alumina or silica, and a highly temperature-stable epoxy or phenolic resin.

A process utilizing a sorbent in a manner which provides a greater and more efficient utilization of the sorbent for the removal of sulfur, or sulfur-containing compounds, from a process stream wherein a sulfur-containing process stream is passed through a fixed-bed of sorbent from one side of the bed to the opposite side, sulfur removed, and passage of the sulfur-containing process stream through said fixed-bed of sorbent continued to breakthrough of sulfur from the exit side of the bed. Then the direction of flow of the sulfur-containing process stream is reversed without desorption of the sulfur from the sorbent, and passage of the sulfur-containing process stream in said reverse direction through the bed again continued until breakthrough of sulfur from the side of the sorbent bed opposite the former entry side. In a preferred embodiment, two or more of the fixed-beds of sorbent are staged, or placed in series.

Removal of sulfur from process streams

Increasing the surface acidity of active carbons can lead to an increase in capacity for hydrogen adsorption. Increasing the surface basicity can facilitate methane adsorption. The treatment of carbons is most effective when the carbon source material is selected to have a low ash content i.e., below about 3%, and where the ash consists predominantly of alkali metals alkali earth, with only minimal amounts of transition metals and silicon. The carbon is washed in water or acid and then oxidized, e.g. in a stream of oxygen and an inert gas at an elevated temperature.
