Peace: a plasma electron and current experiment
A. D. Johnstone,C. Alsop,S. Burge,P. J. Carter,Andrew J. Coates,A. J. Coker,Andrew Fazakerley,Manuel Grande,R. A. Gowen,C. Gurgiolo,B. K. Hancock,B. T. Narheim,Alun Preece,P. H. Sheather,J. D. Winningham,R. D. Woodliffe +15 more
TL;DR: In this paper, an electron analyser was used to measure the three-dimensional velocity distribution of electrons in the energy range from 0.59 eV to 26.4 keV on the four spacecraft of the Cluster mission.
Journal ArticleDOI
Plasma injection and transport in the mid‐altitude polar cusp
James L. Burch,Patricia H. Reiff,Roderick A. Heelis,J. D. Winningham,W. B. Hanson,C. Gurgiolo,J. D. Menietti,R. A. Hoffman,J. N. Barfield +8 more
TL;DR: De-1 hot plasma observations in the mid-altitude polar cusp have shown evidence of a significant velocity filtering phenomenon which is consistent with a latitudinally narrow region of plasma injection located at a geocentric distance of about eight earth radii (in a dipole approximation) as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ion flow at comet Halley
Alan Johnstone,Andrew J. Coates,S. J. Kellock,B. Wilken,K. Jockers,H. Rosenbauer,W. Studemann,W. Weiss,V. Formisano,E. Amata,R. Cerulli-Irelli,M. Dobrowolny,R. Terenzi,A. Egidi,H. Borg,B. Hultquist,J. D. Winningham,C. Gurgiolo,D. A. Bryant,Thomas W. D. Edwards,W. C. Feldman,Michelle F. Thomsen,Max K. Wallis,L. Biermann,Heiko A. Schmidt,R. Lust,Gerhard Haerendel,Götz Paschmann +27 more
TL;DR: The three-dimensional positive ion analyzer aboard the Giotto spacecraft has been used to study the interaction between protons and alpha-particles in the solar wind and positive ions from comet Halley as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI
DE-2 photoelectron measurements consistent with a large scale parallel electric field over the polar cap
J. D. Winningham,C. Gurgiolo +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present results from Dynamics Explorer 2 (DE-2) which confirm the experimental results of winningham and Heikkila (1974) and show that the earth's polar caps act much like any conductor immersed in a plasma and illuminated by sunlight.
Journal Article
Observations of the solar-wind and cometary ions during the encounter between giotto and comet-p grigg-skjellerup
A. D. Johnstone,Andrew J. Coates,D. E. Huddleston,Klaus Jockers,B. Wilken,H. Borg,C. Gurgiolo,J. D. Winningham,E. Amata +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, the solar wind interaction with the outflowing gas from a second comet has been recorded by the same in-situ instrumentation that was used for the comet Halley encounter in 1986.
