Global Patterns and Predictions of Seafloor Biomass Using Random Forests
Chih-Lin Wei,Gilbert T. Rowe,Elva Escobar-Briones,Antje Boetius,Thomas Soltwedel,M. Julian Caley,Yousria Soliman,Falk Huettmann,Fangyuan Qu,Zishan Yu,C. Roland Pitcher,Richard L. Haedrich,Mary K. Wicksten,Michael A. Rex,Jeffrey G. Baguley,Jyotsna Sharma,Roberto Danovaro,Ian R. MacDonald,Clifton C. Nunnally,Jody W. Deming,Paul A. Montagna,Mélanie Lévesque,Jan Marcin Węsławski,Maria Włodarska-Kowalczuk,Baban Ingole,Brian J. Bett,David S.M. Billett,Andrew Yool,Bodil A. Bluhm,Katrin Iken,Bhavani Narayanaswamy +30 more
TL;DR: This biomass census and associated maps are vital components of mechanistic deep-sea food web models and global carbon cycling, and as such provide fundamental information that can be incorporated into evidence-based management.
Journal ArticleDOI
Gradient forests: calculating importance gradients on physical predictors
TL;DR: Gradient forest obtains a monotonic function of each predictor that represents the compositional turnover along the gradient of the predictor, which allows for more accurate capturing of biodiversity patterns for the purposes of bioregionalization, delineation of protected areas, or designing of biodiversity surveys.
Journal ArticleDOI
Exploring the role of environmental variables in shaping patterns of seabed biodiversity composition in regional‐scale ecosystems
C. Roland Pitcher,Peter Lawton,Nick Ellis,Stephen J. Smith,Lewis S. Incze,Chih-Lin Wei,Chih-Lin Wei,Michelle E. Greenlaw,Nicholas H. Wolff,Jessica A. Sameoto,Paul V. R. Snelgrove +10 more
TL;DR: Gradient Forest as mentioned in this paper is an extension of Random Forest, capable of modelling nonlinear and threshold responses to interactions between environmental variables, which can be applied to support marine spatial planning and management and has similar applicability in terrestrial realms.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biophysical patterns in benthic assemblage composition across contrasting continental margins off New Zealand
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined whether benthic assemblages are more diverse in a region of high topographic and oceanographic complexity by comparing the diversity of invertebrates across continental margins with contrasting environments.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of trawling on sessile megabenthos in the Great Barrier Reef and evaluation of the efficacy of management strategies
C. Roland Pitcher,Nick Ellis,W.N. Venables,T.J. Wassenberg,Charis Y. Burridge,Greg Smith,Matthew Browne,Francis Pantus,Ian R. Poiner,Peter Doherty,John N. A. Hooper,Neil Gribble +11 more
TL;DR: The results demonstrated that management actions have arrested and reversed previous unsustainable trends for all taxa assessed, and have led to a prawn trawl fishery with improved environmental sustainability.
