An application of fuzzy sets to the Geological Strength Index (GSI) system used in rock engineering

TL;DR: This paper describes the application of fuzzy set theory to the GSI System by incorporating judgement and experience of practising engineers and Mamdani fuzzy algorithm was constructed using 22 “if–then” rules for evaluating discontinuity parameters and their ratings considered in the G SI System.
Journal ArticleDOI

A neuro-fuzzy model for modulus of deformation of jointed rock masses

TL;DR: In this study, construction of a neuro-fuzzy system to estimate the deformation modulus of rock masses is aimed, because this modulus has a crucial importance for many design approaches in rock engineering.
Journal ArticleDOI

Extraction of potential debris source areas by logistic regression technique: a case study from Barla, Besparmak and Kapi mountains (NW Taurids, Turkey)

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used a logistic regression analysis to extract debris source areas by using the data from the slopes of the Barla, Besparmak and Kapi Mountains in the SW part of the Taurids Mountain belt of Turkey, where formation of debris material are clearly evident and common.
Journal ArticleDOI

Draft ISRM suggested method for determining block punch strength index (BPI)

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used the block punch strength index (BPI) to measure the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of a thin plate of rock and showed that BPI leads to insignificant errors when compared to those obtained from point load testing, particularly for laminated weak rocks.
Journal ArticleDOI

Evaluation and selection of indicators for land degradation and desertification monitoring: methodological approach.

TL;DR: An approach to derive relationships for defining land degradation and desertification risk and developing appropriate tools for assessing the effectiveness of the various land management practices using indicators is presented in the present paper.
