How has Japan become a major economic power, a world leader in the automotive and electronics industries? What is the secret of their success? The knowledge-creating company : how Japanese companies create the dynamics of innovation

This handbook looks to provide academics and students with a comprehensive and holistic understanding of the phenomenon of innovation. Innovation spans a number of fields within the social sciences and humanities: Management, Economics, Geography, Sociology, Politics, Psychology, and History. Consequently, the rapidly increasing body of literature on innovation is characterized by a multitude of perspectives based on, or cutting across, existing disciplines and specializations. Scholars of innovation can come from such diverse starting points that much of this literature can be missed, and so constructive dialogues missed. The editors of The Oxford Handbook of Innovation have carefully selected and designed twenty-one contributions from leading academic experts within their particular field, each focusing on a specific aspect of innovation. The Oxford Handbook of Innovation

Models that depict innovation as a smooth, well-behaved linear process badly misspecify the nature and direction of the causal factors at work. Innovation is complex, uncertain, somewhat disorderly, and subject to changes of many sorts. Innovation is also difficult to measure and demands close coordination of adequate technical knowledge and excellent market judgment in order to satisfy economic, technological, and other types of constraints—all simultaneously. The process of innovation must be viewed as a series of changes in a complete system not only of hardware, but also of market environment, production facilities and knowledge, and the social contexts of the innovation organization.

An Overview of Innovation

What makes organizations so similar? We contend that the engine of rationalization and bureaucratization has moved from the competitive marketplace to the state and the professions. Once a set of organizations emerges as a field, a paradox arises: rational actors make their organizations increasingly similar as they try to change them. We describe three isomorphic processes-coercive, mimetic, and normative—leading to this outcome. We then specify hypotheses about the impact of resource centralization and dependency, goal ambiguity and technical uncertainty, and professionalization and structuration on isomorphic change. Finally, we suggest implications for theories of organizations and social change.

Given the current scenario of marketplace instability and uncertainty the way companies conduct and manage their intellectual capital (IC) is crucial. Numerous studies have highlighted the role of IC as a key driver of organizational performance due to its centrality as an asset in the value creation process, but few have analysed the relationships between IC and the staff satisfaction. Thus, we intend to answer the following question: how the three dimensions of intellectual capital (human capital, structural and relational) are perceived by credit union employees and which is the respective effect on job satisfaction? In this sense, it was pretended to determine the influence of each IC’s dimension on job satisfaction in this financial institution. This paper presents a structural model of the relationships linking the dimensions of IC – human, structural, and relational capital – to job satisfaction. In order to evaluate this model, empirical data was obtained from a questionnaire based on Bontis (1998) and applied to 109 employees of a credit cooperative in northeaster Brazil (UNICRED - Joao Pessoa). Results suggest that structural capital has a close influence over satisfaction and also plays the role of mediator between human capital and satisfaction. On the other hand, relational capital exerts no significant influence over satisfaction.

This study conducted a bibliometric review of the literature on the importance of embeddedness in internationalization processes in order to map the research on this topic, identify its main trends, and propose future lines of investigation. The review covered articles published in academic journals listed in the Web of Science database. The analysis of the data obtained relied on the functions offered by IRaMuTeQ software. The results confirm internationalization is important in current business contexts in terms of the development of companies’ activities and these firms’ local relationship networks. Four clusters of articles were identified as major trends in the literature: international strategic management, networking through international joint ventures, international entrepreneurship, and trade and international relations. The findings contribute to mapping the existing literature on the importance of embeddedness to the development of companies’ international activities, as well as identifying potential new lines of investigation.

Embeddedness in internationalization: Knowledge map and research agenda proposal


The coronavirus disease-19 pandemic has forced universities worldwide to develop stronger crisis responses in order to support the surrounding communities more effectively. These solutions are based on collaborations between higher education institutions and industries that facilitate knowledge co-creation. Historically, universities have been knowledge-intensive institutions capable of producing additional findings through research. Currently, these organisations’ most important contributions to national economies are related to universities’ development of fresh knowledge and technical expertise. In parallel, all industries’ business environments have become extremely dynamic, which requires companies to focus on new solutions, rapid development and cost efficiency. To cope with these pressures, industries have been forced to search for new partners, so university-industry collaboration (UIC) has become a key resource for managers seeking to promote innovation and technological development. This study explored the relationship between research and innovation based on smart specialisation strategies and UIC, including the roles of university-industry (U-I) joint research and academics’ motivations for interacting with industries. Based on data collected from 841 Portuguese and Spanish researchers, the results reveal that smart specialisation policies’ effects on UIC are driven by U-I joint research development and university faculty members’ motivations for co-operating with industry professionals. The findings indicate that U-I research activities and universities’ incentives to collaborate with industries fully convert smart specialisation strategies’ effects into higher levels of U-I knowledge transfer.
