Hydrogen fuel is considered as the cleanest renewable resource and the primary alternative to fossil fuels for future energy supply. Sustainable hydrogen generation is the major prerequisite to realize future hydrogen economy. The electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), as the vital step of water electrolysis to H2 production, has been the subject of extensive study over the past decades. In this comprehensive review, we first summarize the fundamentals of HER and review the recent state-of-the-art advances in the low-cost and high-performance catalysts based on noble and non-noble metals, as well as metal-free HER electrocatalysts. We systemically discuss the insights into the relationship among the catalytic activity, morphology, structure, composition, and synthetic method. Strategies for developing an effective catalyst, including increasing the intrinsic activity of active sites and/or increasing the number of active sites, are summarized and highlighted. Finally, the challenges, perspectives, and research directions of HER electrocatalysis are featured.

Recent Advances in Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Using Nanoparticles.

Although current high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have taken over the commercial rechargeable battery market, increasing concerns about limited lithium resources, high cost, and insecurity of organic electrolyte scale-up limit their further development. Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs), an alternative battery chemistry, have paved the way not only for realizing environmentally benign and safe energy storage devices but also for reducing the manufacturing costs of next-generation batteries. This Review underscores recent advances in aqueous ZIBs; these include the design of a highly reversible Zn anode, optimization of the electrolyte, and a wide range of cathode materials and their energy storage mechanisms. We also present recent advanced techniques that aim at overcoming the current issues in aqueous ZIB systems. This Review on the future perspectives and research directions will provide a guide for future aqueous ZIB study.

Recent Advances in Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

Zinc-ion batteries built on water-based electrolytes featuring compelling price-points, competitive performance, and enhanced safety represent advanced energy storage chemistry as a promising alternative to current lithium-ion battery systems. Attempts to develop rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) can be traced to as early as the 1980s; however, since 2015, the research activity in this field has surged throughout the world. Despite the achievements made in exploring electrode materials so far, significant challenges remain at the material level and even on the whole aqueous ZIBs system, leading to the failure of ZIBs to meet commercial requirements. This review aims to discuss how to pave the way for developing aqueous ZIBs. The current research efforts related to aqueous ZIBs electrode materials and electrolytes are summarized, including an analysis of the problems encountered in both cathode/anode materials and electrolyte optimization. Some concerns and feasible solutions for achieving practical aqueous ZIBs are discussed in detail. We would like to point out that merely improving the electrode materials is not enough; synergistic optimization strategies toward the whole battery system are also deeply needed. Finally, some perspectives are provided on the subsequent optimization design for further research efforts in the aqueous ZIB field.

Issues and opportunities facing aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Heterogenous electrocatalysts based on transition metal sulfides (TMS) are being actively explored in renewable energy research because nanostructured forms support high intrinsic activities for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, it is described how researchers are working to improve the performance of TMS-based materials by manipulating their internal and external nanoarchitectures. A general introduction to the water-splitting reaction is initially provided to explain the most important parameters in accessing the catalytic performance of nanomaterials catalysts. Later, the general synthetic methods used to prepare TMS-based materials are explained in order to delve into the various strategies being used to achieve higher electrocatalytic performance in the HER. Complementary strategies can be used to increase the OER performance of TMS, resulting in bifunctional water-splitting electrocatalysts for both the HER and the OER. Finally, the current challenges and future opportunities of TMS materials in the context of water splitting are summarized. The aim herein is to provide insights gathered in the process of studying TMS, and describe valuable guidelines for engineering other kinds of nanomaterial catalysts for energy conversion and storage technologies.

Scientific Challenges for the Implementation of Zn-Ion Batteries

Zinc-ion batteries are under current research focus because of their uniqueness in low cost and high safety. However, it is still desirable to improve the rate performance by improving the Zn2+ (de)intercalation kinetics and long-cycle stability by eliminating the dendrite formation problem. Herein, the first paradigm of a high-rate and ultrastable flexible quasi-solid-state zinc-ion battery is constructed from a novel 2D ultrathin layered zinc orthovanadate array cathode, a Zn array anode supported by a conductive porous graphene foam, and a gel electrolyte. The nanoarray structure for both electrodes assures the high rate capability and alleviates the dendrite growth. The flexible Zn-ion battery has a depth of discharge of ≈100% for the cathode and 66% for the anode, and delivers an impressive high-rate of 50 C (discharge in 60 s), long-term durability of 2000 cycles at 20 C, and unprecedented energy density ≈115 Wh kg-1 , together with a peak power density ≈5.1 kW kg-1 (calculation includes masses of cathode, anode, and current collectors). First principles calculations and quantitative kinetics analysis show that the high-rate and stable properties are correlated with the 2D fast ion-migration pathways and the introduced intercalation pseudocapacitance.

A high-rate and stable quasi-solid-state zinc-ion battery with novel 2D layered zinc orthovanadate array

As a large family of two-dimensional (2D) materials, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have been attracting an increasing level of attention and therefore considerable research input, owing to their intriguing catalytic, chemical and physical properties. The high exposed surface area, potentially large number of active sites, and chemical stability provide TMDs with vast opportunities for use as a unique class of electrocatalysts, while their low electrical conductivity and other deficiencies have drawn considerable research efforts for further modification. The optimization of TMDs can be achieved by several approaches, including site doping/modification, phase modulation, control of growth morphology and construction of heterostructures, by both appropriate computational simulations and purposely designed experimental studies. In tuning the TMD-based electrocatalysts, computational calculations have played uniquely important roles in predicting the structure and understanding the operational mechanism of catalytic performance. Indeed, the importance of refined calculations has been growing rapidly to provide comprehensive and unique guidance towards further modification of the existing TMD-based electrocatalysts and the discovery of new ones. In this critical review, we will look into the rapid advancement of the highly efficient TMD-based electrocatalysts that have been developed in recent years, achieved by combined computational and experimental approaches. Aiming to provide a generalized overall picture, we have conducted further computational studies as a systematic approach to unveil the modulation in the structure and the improvement in electrocatalytic properties brought in by appropriate element doping/modification in either basal plane A-(metal atoms) and B-(chalcogen atoms) sites or edge sites of the 2D TMD materials, as well as in some of those non-layered metal disulfides/diselenides. This review is concluded by summarizing the likely future development and perspectives of TMD-based electrocatalysts.
