What is ecological speciation

Global demand for macroalgal and microalgal foods is growing, and algae are increasingly being consumed for functional benefits beyond the traditional considerations of nutrition and health. There is substantial evidence for the health benefits of algal-derived food products, but there remain considerable challenges in quantifying these benefits, as well as possible adverse effects. First, there is a limited understanding of nutritional composition across algal species, geographical regions, and seasons, all of which can substantially affect their dietary value. The second issue is quantifying which fractions of algal foods are bioavailable to humans, and which factors influence how food constituents are released, ranging from food preparation through genetic differentiation in the gut microbiome. Third is understanding how algal nutritional and functional constituents interact in human metabolism. Superimposed considerations are the effects of harvesting, storage, and food processing techniques that can dramatically influence the potential nutritive value of algal-derived foods. We highlight this rapidly advancing area of algal science with a particular focus on the key research required to assess better the health benefits of an alga or algal product. There are rich opportunities for phycologists in this emerging field, requiring exciting new experimental and collaborative approaches.

Photosynthetic responses to temperature were examined in tetrasporophytes of Lomentaria baileyana and Lomentaria orcadensis (Rhodophyta). These species have different temperature ranges for growth that reflect seasonal temperature extremes in their natural distributions. L. baileyana is a temperate-subtropical species which grows between 15 and 33°C, whereas L. orcadensis is a boreal-temperate species which grows between 10 and 20°C. Interspecific differences in the photosynthetic responses to temperature were similar to those for growth, suggesting that photosynthesis may determine the temperature range over which Lomentaria tetrasporophytes can grow. Light-saturated rates of photosynthesis were higher in L. orcadensis below 15°C, whereas L. baileyana could photosynthesize at temperatures above 30°C, which inhibited photosynthesis in L. orcadensis. Photosynthetic adaptation to temperature in the red algae Lomentaria baileyana and Lomentaria orcadensis

Enteric methane emissions are the single largest source of direct greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in beef and dairy value chains and a substantial contributor to anthropogenic methane emissions globally. In late 2019, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) and the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research (FFAR) convened approximately 50 stakeholders representing research and production of seaweeds, animal feeds, dairy cattle, and beef and dairy foods to discuss challenges and opportunities associated with the use of seaweed-based ingredients to reduce enteric methane emissions. This Perspective article describes the considerations identified by the workshop participants and suggests next steps for the further development and evaluation of seaweed-based feed ingredients as enteric methane mitigants. Although numerous compounds derived from sources other than seaweed have been identified as having enteric methane mitigation potential, these mitigants are outside the scope of this article.

Rates of inorganic nitrogen uptake by three Northeast US and three Asian species of Porphyra were compared in short-term incubations to evaluate potential for longer term and larger scale examination of bioremediation of nutrient-loaded effluents from finfish aquaculture facilities. The effects of nitrogen (N) species and concentration, temperature, acclimation history, and irradiance were investigated. Uptake rates increased ca. nine-fold from 20 to 150 μM N. Nitrate and ammonium uptake occurred at similar rates. Irradiance had a strong effect, with uptake at 40 μmol photons m−2 s−1only 55% of uptake at 150 μmol photons m−2 s−1. N-replete tissue took up inorganic nitrogen at rates that averaged only 60% of nutrient-deprived tissue. Although there were species (P. amplissima > (P. purpurea = P. umbilicalis)) and temperature effects (10 °C>5 °C>15 °C), interactions among factors indicated that individual species be considered separately. Overall, P. amplissima was the best Northeast US candidate. It took up ammonium at faster rates than other local species at 10 and 15 °C, two temperatures that fall within the expected range of industrial conditions for finfish operations.
