The production of solar fuel through photocatalytic water splitting and CO2 reduction using photocatalysts has attracted considerable attention owing to the global energy shortage and growing environmental problems. During the past few years, many studies have demonstrated that graphene can markedly enhance the efficiency of photocatalysts for solar-fuel generation because of its unique 2D conjugated structure and electronic properties. Herein we summarize the recent advances in the application of graphene-based photocatalysts for solar-fuel production, including CO2 reduction to hydrocarbon fuel and water splitting to H2. A brief overview of the fundamental principles for splitting of water and reduction of CO2 is given. The different roles of graphene in these graphene-based photocatalysts for improving photocatalytic performance are discussed. Finally, the perspectives on the challenges and opportunities for future research in this promising area are also presented.

Graphene‐Based Photocatalysts for Solar‐Fuel Generation

A novel nanoarchitecture is developed by combining the nanostructured conductive polymer polypyrrole with highly electrically conductive graphene nanosheets in a multilayered configuration to achieve high specific capacitance and low electronic resistance for supercapacitor electrode applications. The fibrous network of polypyrrole nanowires with high electrolyte ionic accessibility was interspersed with electrically conductive monolayers of highly aligned large sized graphene nanosheets as a series of current collectors within the macroscopic configuration for enhanced electronic charge transport inside the electrode. Multilayered Nanoarchitecture of Graphene Nanosheets and Polypyrrole Nanowires for High Performance Supercapacitor Electrodes

This paper presents a comprehensive review of the literature on one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures (nanowires, nanoribbons, nanotubes, nanobelts, and nanofibers) of π-conjugated small molecules, oligomers, and polymers. The diverse methods used in assembling the molecular building blocks into 1D functional nanostructures and nanodevices are discussed, including hard and soft template-assisted synthesis, electrospinning, nanolithography, self-assembly in solution and at interfaces, physical vapor transport, and other strategies. Optical, charge transport, electronic, and photoconductive properties of nanowires and nanotubes of selected classes of π-conjugated molecular systems are discussed next, highlighting unique features of the 1D nanostructures compared to 2D thin films. One-Dimensional Nanostructures of π-Conjugated Molecular Systems: Assembly, Properties, and Applications from Photovoltaics, Sensors, and Nanophotonics to Nanoelectronics†

Organic photoresponse materials and devices are critically important to organic optoelectronics and energy crises. The activities of photoresponse in organic materials can be summarized in three effects, photoconductive, photovoltaic and optical memory effects. Correspondingly, devices based on the three effects can be divided into (i) photoconductive devices such as photodetectors, photoreceptors, photoswitches and phototransistors, (ii) photovoltaic devices such as organic solar cells, and (iii) optical data storage devices. It is expected that this systematic analysis of photoresponse materials and devices could be a guide for the better understanding of structure–property relationships of organic materials and provide key clues for the fabrication of high performance organic optoelectronic devices, the integration of them in circuits and the application of them in renewable green energy strategies (critical review, 452 references).

Organic photoresponse materials and devices

While the chemical structure of organic semiconductors has an obvious effect on their proclivity for charge transport, the ways with which they are processed have a dramatic effect on the performance of plastic electronics devices incorporating them. In some cases, morphological defects and misalignment of crystalline grains can completely obscure the materials' intrinsic charge transport properties. Although some deposition methods, especially vapor-phase ones, can produce single crystals and thus avoid some of these problems, it is desirable to gain a fundamental understanding of how to improve charge transport when using solution-phase deposition techniques. In this review, we present both a survey of solution-based processing techniques for plastic electronics relevant on both the commercial and research scale and a set of strategies to control thin film morphology towards enhancing their electronic transport properties.
