Geochronology and stratigraphy of late Pleistocene lake cycles on the southern Bolivian Altiplano: Implications for causes of tropical climate change
TL;DR: In this article, a chronology of changes in lake level over the past 120 k.y.t. is presented, and the authors suggest that paleolakes on the Bolivian Altiplano expanded in response to increased moisture in the Amazon and enhanced transport of that moisture onto the altiplano by strengthened trade winds or southward displacement of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ).
Journal ArticleDOI
The age of Homo naledi and associated sediments in the Rising Star Cave, South Africa
Paul H.G.M. Dirks,Paul H.G.M. Dirks,Eric M. Roberts,Eric M. Roberts,Hannah L. Hilbert-Wolf,Jan Kramers,John Hawks,John Hawks,Anthony Dosseto,Mathieu Duval,Marina Elliott,Mary Evans,Rainer Grün,Rainer Grün,John Hellstrom,Andy I.R. Herries,Renaud Joannes-Boyau,Tebogo V. Makhubela,Christa Placzek,Jessie Robbins,Carl Spandler,Jelle P. Wiersma,Jon Woodhead,Lee R. Berger +23 more
TL;DR: These age results demonstrate that a morphologically primitive hominin, Homo naledi, survived into the later parts of the Pleistocene in Africa, and indicate a much younger age for the Homo nalingi fossils than have previously been hypothesized based on their morphology.
Journal ArticleDOI
Early human occupation of a maritime desert, Barrow Island, North-West Australia
Peter Veth,Ingrid Ward,Tiina Manne,Sean Ulm,Kane Ditchfield,Joe Dortch,Fiona Hook,Fiona Petchey,Alan G. Hogg,Daniele Questiaux,Martina Demuro,Lee J. Arnold,Nigel A. Spooner,Vladimir Levchenko,Jane Skippington,Chae Byrne,Mark Basgall,David Zeanah,David Belton,Petra Helmholz,Szilvia Bajkan,Richard M. Bailey,Christa Placzek,Peter Kendrick +23 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors focus on the dating and sedimentology of Boodie Cave to establish the framework for ongoing analysis of cultural materials and present new data on these cultural assemblages, including charcoal, faunal remains and lithics.
Journal ArticleDOI
Climate in the dry central andes over geologic, millennial, and interannual timescales
Christa Placzek,Jay Quade,Julio L. Betancourt,P. Jonathan Patchett,Jason A. Rech,Claudio Latorre,Ari Matmon,Camille A. Holmgren,Nathan B. English +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed several paleoenvironmental records from a broad geographic region spanning the Altiplano in Bolivia (18°S−22°S) and continuing south along the western Andean flank to ca. 26°S.
Journal ArticleDOI
A 130 ka reconstruction of rainfall on the Bolivian Altiplano
TL;DR: In this paper, a lake history from the Southern Bolivian Altiplano was used to evaluate precipitation variability over the last 130 ka, showing a strong link between central Andean climate and Atlantic sea surface temperature gradients during the late Pleistocene, even though today rainfall variability is driven mostly by Pacific sea-surface temperature anomalies associated with El Nino/Southern Oscillation.
