Long-term Cultures of Bone Marrow–Derived Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells Frequently Undergo Spontaneous Malignant Transformation
Gro V. Røsland,Agnete Svendsen,Anja Torsvik,Ewa Sobala,Emmet McCormack,Heike Immervoll,Josef Mysliwietz,Joerg-Christian Tonn,Roland Goldbrunner,Per Eystein Lønning,Rolf Bjerkvig,Christian Schichor +11 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that spontaneous malignant transformation may represent a biohazard in long-term ex vivo expansion of hMSC and this spontaneous transformation process may represents a unique model for studying molecular pathways initiating malignant Transformation of h MSC.
Journal ArticleDOI
Spontaneous malignant transformation of human mesenchymal stem cells reflects cross-contamination: putting the research field on track - letter.
Anja Torsvik,Gro V. Røsland,Agnete Svendsen,Anders Molven,Heike Immervoll,Emmet McCormack,Per Eystein Lønning,Monika Primon,Ewa Sobala,Joerg-Christian Tonn,Roland Goldbrunner,Christian Schichor,Josef Mysliwietz,Tamara T. Lah,Helena Motaln,Stian Knappskog,Rolf Bjerkvig +16 more
TL;DR: Spontaneous transformation of bone marrow-derived human MSC, isolated and expanded independently in two laboratories is reported in this journal.
Journal ArticleDOI
Reprogramming of Pericyte-Derived Cells of the Adult Human Brain into Induced Neuronal Cells
Marisa Karow,Rodrigo Vega Sánchez,Christian Schichor,Giacomo Masserdotti,Felipe Ortega,Christophe Heinrich,Susan Gascon,Muhammad Amir Khan,D. Chichung Lie,Arianna Dellavalle,Giulio Cossu,Roland Goldbrunner,Magdalena Götz,Benedikt Berninger,Benedikt Berninger +14 more
TL;DR: It is shown that cells from the adult human cerebral cortex expressing pericyte hallmarks can be reprogrammed into neuronal cells by retrovirus-mediated coexpression of the transcription factors Sox2 and Mash1, raising the possibility of functional conversion of endogenous cells in theadult human brain to induced neuronal fates.
Journal ArticleDOI
Malignant gliomas actively recruit bone marrow stromal cells by secreting angiogenic cytokines.
Tobias Birnbaum,Julia Roider,Christoph J. Schankin,C. S. Padovan,Christian Schichor,Roland Goldbrunner,Andreas Straube +6 more
TL;DR: It is shown that gliomas have the capacity to actively attract MSC by secreting a multitude of angiogenic cytokines, which supports the hypothesis thatgliomas use theirAngiogenic pathways to recruit mesenchymal progenitor cells.
Journal ArticleDOI
Spatial memory and hippocampal volume in humans with unilateral vestibular deafferentation.
Katharina Hüfner,Derek A. Hamilton,Roger Kalla,Thomas Stephan,Stefan Glasauer,Jun Ma,Roland Brüning,Hans J. Markowitsch,Kirsten Labudda,Christian Schichor,Michael Strupp,Thomas Brandt +11 more
TL;DR: No significant deficits in spatial memory and navigation could be demonstrated in the patients with left vestibular failure, whereas patients with right Vestibular loss showed a tendency to perform worse on the respective tests.
