Journal ArticleDOI
The Women's Interagency HIV Study: an observational cohort brings clinical sciences to the bench.
Melanie C. Bacon,Viktor von Wyl,Christine Alden,Gerald B. Sharp,Esther Robison,Nancy A. Hessol,Stephen J. Gange,Yvonne Barranday,Susan Holman,Kathleen M. Weber,Mary Young +10 more
TL;DR: The purpose of this report is to update researchers on the progress of the WIHS and to provide information on WIHS resources, the methods by which they were obtained, and background for any new potential researchers interested in conducting collaborative research through shared use of these resources.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cognitive function in women with HIV: findings from the Women's Interagency HIV Study.
Pauline M. Maki,Leah H. Rubin,Victor Valcour,Eileen M. Martin,Howard Crystal,Mary Young,Kathleen M. Weber,Jennifer J. Manly,Jean L. Richardson,Christine Alden,Kathryn Anastos +10 more
TL;DR: The effect of HIV on cognition in women is very small except among women with low reading level or HIV-related comorbidities, and direct comparisons of rates of impairment in well-matched groups of HIV-infected men and women are needed to evaluate possible sex differences in cognition.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cognitive trajectories over 4 years among HIV-infected women with optimal viral suppression.
Leah H. Rubin,Pauline M. Maki,Gayle Springer,Lorie Benning,Kathryn Anastos,Deborah Gustafson,Maria C. Villacres,Xiong Jiang,Adaora A. Adimora,Drenna Waldrop-Valverde,David E. Vance,Hector Bolivar,Christine Alden,Eileen M. Martin,Victor Valcour +14 more
TL;DR: Cognitive difficulties remain among HIV+ women despite persistent viral suppression, and in some instances, VS women are worse than NVS women, reinforcing the need for novel adjunctive therapies to attenuate cognitive problems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Retention and attendance of women enrolled in a large prospective study of HIV-1 in the United States.
Nancy A. Hessol,Kathleen M. Weber,Susan Holman,Esther Robison,Lakshmi Goparaju,Christine Alden,Naoko Kono,D. Heather Watts,Niloufar Ameli +8 more
TL;DR: Preventing early loss to follow-up resulted in better study retention early, but late loss to following-up may require different retention strategies.
Journal ArticleDOI
The association of perceived stress and verbal memory is greater in HIV-infected versus HIV-uninfected women
Leah H. Rubin,Judith A. Cook,Kathleen M. Weber,Mardge H. Cohen,Eileen M. Martin,Victor Valcour,Joel Milam,Kathryn Anastos,Mary Young,Christine Alden,Deborah Gustafson,Pauline M. Maki +11 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that high levels of perceived stress contribute to the deficits in verbal memory observed in HIV-infected women from the Women's Interagency HIV Study.
