A Review of Ice Particle Shapes in Cirrus formed In Situ and in Anvils
R. P. Lawson,Sarah Woods,Eric J. Jensen,Ehsan Erfani,Ehsan Erfani,Colin Gurganus,Martin Gallagher,Paul Connolly,James A. Whiteway,Anthony J. Baran,Anthony J. Baran,Peter T. May,Andrew J. Heymsfield,Carl G. Schmitt,Greg M. McFarquhar,Junshik Um,Alain Protat,Matthew Bailey,Sara Lance,Andreas Muehlbauer,Jeffrey L. Stith,Alexei Korolev,Owen B. Toon,Martina Krämer +23 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the results from 22 airborne field campaigns, including more than 10 million high-resolution particle images collected in cirrus formed in situ and in convective anvils, are interpreted in terms of particle shapes and their potential impact on radiative transfer.
Journal ArticleDOI
Aircraft Observations of Cumulus Microphysics Ranging from the Tropics to Midlatitudes: Implications for a “New” Secondary Ice Process
TL;DR: In situ data collected by three research aircraft in four geographical locations are analyzed to determine the relationship between cloud-base temperature, drop size distribution, and the development of supercooled water drops and ice in strong updraft cores of convective clouds as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Laboratory and Flight Tests of 2D Imaging Probes: Toward a Better Understanding of Instrument Performance and the Impact on Archived Data
Colin Gurganus,Paul Lawson +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the performance of 2D-S and Cloud Imaging Probe (CIP) is evaluated on a Learjet research aircraft with the aid of two devices: a droplet generator that provides known concentrations of water drops from about 15 to 65 μm ± 1 μm.
