Journal ArticleDOI
Agricultural intensification, dietary diversity, and markets in the global food security narrative
TL;DR: In this article, a more nuanced approach sensitive to local contexts and appreciative of foods other than staples may lead to alternative policy choices in many places in the developing world, which may have unintended negative consequences on dietary quality.
Journal ArticleDOI
Forests, Trees, and Micronutrient-Rich Food Consumption in Indonesia
Amy Ickowitz,D. Rowland,Bronwen Powell,Bronwen Powell,Mohammad A. Salim,Terry Sunderland,Terry Sunderland +6 more
TL;DR: The results show that different tree-dominated land classes were associated with the dietary quality of people living within them in the provinces where they were dominant and the swidden/agroforestry land class was the landscape associated with more frequent consumption of the largest number of micronutrient rich food groups.
Journal ArticleDOI
Forest foods and healthy diets: quantifying the contributions
D. Rowland,D. Rowland,Amy Ickowitz,Bronwen Powell,Robert Nasi,Terry Sunderland,Terry Sunderland +6 more
TL;DR: The authors investigated the dietary contributions of wild forest foods in smallholder dominated forested landscapes from 37 sites in 24 tropical countries, using data from the Poverty and Environment Network (PEN) and compared quantities of forest foods consumed by households with dietary recommendations and national average consumption patterns.
Journal ArticleDOI
Population mapping of gibbons in Kalimantan, Indonesia: correlates of gibbon density and vegetation across the species’ range
Susan M. Cheyne,Lauren J. Gilhooly,Marie Hamard,Andrea Höing,Peter R. Houlihan,Kursani,Brent Loken,Abigail C. Phillips,Yaya Rayadin,Bernat Ripoll Capilla,D. Rowland,Wiwit Juwita Sastramidjaja,Stephanie N. Spehar,Claire J. H. Thompson,Michal Zrust +14 more
TL;DR: The first comprehensive survey of gibbons across Indonesian Borneo was carried out to determine whether densities of gibbon species are cor- related with vegetation characteristics, and if so, whether the same characteristics are correlated with density across all forest types, and to identify threats to the areas.
Journal ArticleDOI
A methodological approach for assessing cross-site landscape change: Understanding socio-ecological systems
Terry Sunderland,Rabdo Abdoulaye,Ronju Ahammad,S. Asaha,Frédéric Baudron,Elizabeth Deakin,Jean Yves Duriaux,Ian M.S. Eddy,Samson Foli,Davison Gumbo,Kaysara Khatun,Mumba Kondwani,Mrigesh Kshatriya,Laurio Leonald,D. Rowland,Natasha Stacey,Stephanie A. Tomscha,Kevin F. Yang,Sarah E. Gergel,Josh van Vianen +19 more
TL;DR: The Agrarian Change Project (ACP) as mentioned in this paper is a multi-disciplinary research initiative that applies detailed socio-ecological methodologies in multi-functional landscapes, and assess the subsequent implications for conservation, livelihoods and food security.
