Journal ArticleDOI
Transport and release of chemicals from plastics to the environment and to wildlife
Emma L. Teuten,Jovita M. Saquing,Detlef R.U. Knappe,Morton A. Barlaz,Susanne Jonsson,Annika Björn,Steven J. Rowland,Richard C. Thompson,Tamara S. Galloway,Rei Yamashita,Daisuke Ochi,Yutaka Watanuki,Charles J. Moore,Pham Hung Viet,Touch Seang Tana,Maricar S. Prudente,Ruchaya Boonyatumanond,Mohamad Pauzi Zakaria,Kongsap Akkhavong,Yuko Ogata,Hisashi Hirai,Satoru Iwasa,Kaoruko Mizukawa,Yuki Hagino,Ayako Imamura,Mahua Saha,Hideshige Takada +26 more
TL;DR: Model calculations and experimental observations consistently show that polyethylene accumulates more organic contaminants than other plastics such as polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride, and PCBs could transfer from contaminated plastics to streaked shearwater chicks.
Journal ArticleDOI
Foraging behavior and Diet of Streaked Shearwaters Calonectris leucomelas Rearing Chicks on Mikura Island
TL;DR: Streaked Shearwaters breeding on the island in low—productive Kuroshio water, therefore, adopted dual foraging strategies, and changed their diet and dive frequencies in relation to water masses.
Journal ArticleDOI
Foraging trip decisions by the streaked shearwater Calonectris leucomelas depend on both parental and chick state
TL;DR: Although the birds did not show a clear dual foraging pattern, trip duration varied widely from 1 to 15 days, and feeding efficiency decreased as trip duration increased, parents accumulated more energy reserves when they took longer trips.
Journal ArticleDOI
Post-breeding movement and activities of two Streaked Shearwaters in the north-western Pacific
Akinori Takahashi,Daisuke Ochi,Yutaka Watanuki,Tomohiro Deguchi,Nariko Oka,Vsevolod Afanasyev,James W. Fox,Philip N. Trathan +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors used miniature light-level/immersion loggers (geolocators) to study the movements and behavior of two Streaked Shearwaters (Calonectris leucomelas) during their travel away from Japan, after the breeding season.
Journal ArticleDOI
Distribution, body length, and abundance of blue shark and shortfin mako offshore of northeastern Japan, as determined from observed pelagic longline data, 2000–2014
Seiji Ohshimo,Yuki Fujinami,Ko Shiozaki,Mikihiko Kai,Yasuko Semba,Nobuhiro Katsumata,Daisuke Ochi,Hiroaki Matsunaga,Hiroshi Minami,Masashi Kiyota,Kotaro Yokawa +10 more
TL;DR: Blue shark and shortfin mako have eurythermal distributions, but the application of a generalized additive model (GAM) showed that the sea surface temperatures at catch sites positive for shortfinMako were warmer than those for blue shark, and the probabilities of occurrence of both sharks differed by size category.
