A survey of acoustic conditions and noise levels in secondary school classrooms in England

TL;DR: Comparison of unoccupied and occupied data showed that unoccupied acoustic conditions affect the noise levels occurring during lessons, and room height and the amount of glazing need to be controlled to reduce reverberation to suitable levels for teaching and learning.
Journal ArticleDOI

Adolescents' perceptions of their school's acoustic environment: the development of an evidence based questionnaire.

TL;DR: The study demonstrates that adolescents are reliable judges of their school's acoustic environment, and have insight into the disruption to teaching and learning caused by poor listening conditions.
Journal ArticleDOI

The effects of classroom noise on the reading comprehension of adolescents

TL;DR: The results showed that the performance of all pupils was significantly negatively affected in the 70 dB LAeq condition, for the number of questions attempted and the accuracy of answers to factual and word learning questions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Comparison of environmental and acoustic factors in occupied school classrooms for 11–16 year old students

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed and compared environmental and acoustic measurements taken from 12 contrasting schools in England and found that rooms with mechanical ventilation had higher background noise levels than those using natural ventilation.
Journal ArticleDOI

Students’ perceptions of school acoustics and the impact of noise on teaching and learning in secondary schools : findings of a questionnaire survey

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present the design and findings of an online questionnaire survey of 11-16 year olds' impressions of their school's acoustic environment, and of an experimental study into the effects of typical levels of classroom noise on adolescent's performance on numeracy and cognitive functioning tasks.
