Electronic states of highly charged ions show magnified fine-structure, Lamb shift, and hyperfine effects making them sensitive probes of bound-state quantum electrodynamics and nuclear physics. Being also impervious to external perturbations renders them ideal candidates for precision spectroscopy and accurate clocks that could test physics beyond the standard model. This review discusses how a variety of ion species and transitions may optimally be used to target such new applications, and presents routes to handle them in the laboratory.

Highly charged ions: Optical clocks and applications in fundamental physics

Precision spectroscopy of atomic systems1 is an invaluable tool for the study of fundamental interactions and symmetries2. Recently, highly charged ions have been proposed to enable sensitive tests of physics beyond the standard model2–5 and the realization of high-accuracy atomic clocks3,5, owing to their high sensitivity to fundamental physics and insensitivity to external perturbations, which result from the high binding energies of their outer electrons. However, the implementation of these ideas has been hindered by the low spectroscopic accuracies (of the order of parts per million) achieved so far6–8. Here we cool trapped, highly charged argon ions to the lowest temperature reported so far, and study them using coherent laser spectroscopy, achieving an increase in precision of eight orders of magnitude. We use quantum logic spectroscopy9,10 to probe the forbidden optical transition in 40Ar13+ at a wavelength of 441 nanometres and measure its excited-state lifetime and g-factor. Our work unlocks the potential of highly charged ions as ubiquitous atomic systems for use in quantum information processing, as frequency standards and in highly sensitive tests of fundamental physics, such as searches for dark-matter candidates11 or violations of fundamental symmetries2. The precision of laser spectroscopy of highly charged ions is improved by eight orders of magnitude by cooling trapped, highly charged ions and using quantum logic spectroscopy, thereby enabling tests of fundamental physics.

Coherent laser spectroscopy of highly charged ions using quantum logic

Precision spectroscopy of atomic systems is an invaluable tool for the advancement of our understanding of fundamental interactions and symmetries. Recently, highly charged ions (HCI) have been proposed for sensitive tests of physics beyond the Standard Model and as candidates for high-accuracy atomic clocks. However, the implementation of these ideas has been hindered by the parts-per-million level spectroscopic accuracies achieved to date. Here, we cool a trapped HCI to the lowest reported temperatures, and introduce coherent laser spectroscopy on HCI with an eight orders of magnitude leap in precision. We probe the forbidden optical transition in $^{40}$Ar$^{13+}$ at 441 nm using quantum-logic spectroscopy and measure both its excited-state lifetime and $g$-factor. Our work ultimately unlocks the potential of HCI, a large, ubiquitous atomic class, for quantum information processing, novel frequency standards, and highly sensitive tests of fundamental physics, such as searching for dark matter candidates or violations of fundamental symmetries.

A central question in ecology is to understand the ecological processes that shape community structure. Niche-based theories have emphasized the important role played by competition for maintaining species diversity. Many of these insights have been derived using MacArthur's consumer resource model (MCRM) or its generalizations. Most theoretical work on the MCRM has focused on small ecosystems with a few species and resources. However theoretical insights derived from small ecosystems many not scale up large ecosystems with many resources and species because large systems with many interacting components often display new emergent behaviors that cannot be understood or deduced from analyzing smaller systems. To address these shortcomings, we develop a statistical physics inspired cavity method to analyze MCRM when both the number of species and the number of resources is large. Unlike previous work in this limit, our theory addresses resource dynamics and resource depletion and demonstrates that species generically and consistently perturb their environments and significantly modify available ecological niches. We show how our cavity approach naturally generalizes niche theory to large ecosystems by accounting for the effect of collective phenomena on species invasion and ecological stability. Our theory suggests that such phenomena are a generic feature of large, natural ecosystems and must be taken into account when analyzing and interpreting community structure. It also highlights the important role that statistical-physics inspired approaches can play in furthering our understanding of ecology.

Statistical physics of community ecology: a cavity solution to MacArthur's consumer resource model.

The linear polarization of x rays generated during a dielectronic recombination --- an electron recombines with an ion and simultaneously excites a bound electron --- is measured in good agreement with theoretical predictions, leading to a refined technique to diagnose the electron currents and magnetic fields in both high-temperature astrophysical and laboratory plasmas.

Polarization measurement of dielectronic recombination transitions in highly charged krypton ions

Electron beam ion traps (EBITs) are ideal tools for both production and study of highly charged ions (HCIs). In order to reduce their construction, maintenance, and operation costs, we have developed a novel, compact, room-temperature design, the Heidelberg Compact EBIT (HC-EBIT). Four already commissioned devices operate at the strongest fields (up to 0.86 T) reported for such EBITs using permanent magnets, run electron beam currents up to 80 mA, and energies up to 10 keV. They demonstrate HCI production, trapping, and extraction of pulsed Ar16+ bunches and continuous 100 pA ion beams of highly charged Xe up to charge state 29+, already with a 4 mA, 2 keV electron beam. Moreover, HC-EBITs offer large solid-angle ports and thus high photon count rates, e.g., in x-ray spectroscopy of dielectronic recombination in HCIs up to Fe24+, achieving an electron-energy resolving power of E/ΔE > 1500 at 5 keV. Besides traditional on-axis electron guns, we have also implemented a novel off-axis gun for laser, synchrotron, and free-electron laser applications, offering clear optical access along the trap axis. We report on its first operation at a synchrotron radiation facility demonstrating the resonant photoexcitation of highly charged oxygen.

The linear polarization of x rays produced by dielectronic recombination into highly charged xenon ions was measured at an electron beam ion trap using the Compton polarimetry technique. This opens numerous possibilities for diagnostics of anisotropies of hot plasmas. Moreover, it was observed that the polarization of x rays, following the dielectronic capture populating the ${[1s2{s}^{2}2{p}_{1/2}]}_{1}$ state, is highly sensitive to the Breit interaction. The experimental results for this transition rule out by $5\ensuremath{\sigma}$ calculations not taking the Breit interaction into account.
