TL;DR: This paper found that financial markets react more positively to charitable initiatives from firms with religion-declared CEOs, but only if these are family businesses, suggesting that CEOs are backed by powerful owners with long-time horizons and a desire to build moral capital with stakeholders.
Abstract: Using a signaling framework, we argue that ethical behavior as evidenced by charitable donations is viewed more positively by investors when seen not to be based on self-serving motives but rather on authentic generosity that builds moral capital. The affirmed religiosity of CEOs may make their ethical position more credible, while their embeddedness within a family business suggests that CEOs are backed by powerful owners with long-time horizons and a desire to build moral capital with stakeholders. We find in a study of market responses to 1572 corporate donations by S&P 1500 firms that financial markets react more positively to charitable initiatives from firms with religion-declared CEOs, but only if these are family businesses.

TL;DR: This study evaluated which factors are associated with an improvement in an HRQOL after spinal fusion surgery for nonambulatory patients with cerebral palsy and found a lower score within the comfort, emotions, and behavior domain of the CPCHILD was predictive of meaningful improvement after surgery.
Abstract: INTRODUCTION It is unclear what factors influence health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in neuromuscular scoliosis The aim of this study was to evaluate which factors are associated with an improvement in an HRQOL after spinal fusion surgery for nonambulatory patients with cerebral palsy (CP) METHODS A total of 157 patients with nonambulatory CP (Gross Motor Function Classification System IV and V) with a minimum of 2-year follow-up after PSF were identified from a prospective multicenter registry Radiographs and quality of life were evaluated preoperatively and 2 years postoperatively Quality of life was evaluated using the validated Caregiver Priorities and Child Health Index of Life with Disabilities (CPCHILD) questionnaire Patients who had an increase of 10 points or greater from baseline CPCHILD scores were considered to have meaningful improvement at 2 years postoperatively 10 points was chosen as a threshold for meaningful improvement based on differences between Gross Motor Function Classification System IV and V patients reported during the development of the CPCHILD Perioperative demographic, clinical, and radiographic variables were analyzed to determine predicators for meaningful improvement by univariate and multivariate regression analysis RESULTS A total of 363% (57/157) of the patients reported meaningful improvement in CPCHILD scores at 2 years postoperatively Preoperative radiographic parameters, postoperative radiographic parameters, and deformity correction did not differ significantly between groups Patients who experienced meaningful improvement from surgery had significantly lower preoperative total CHPILD scores (438 vs 552, P<0001) On backwards conditional binary logistic regression, only the preoperative comfort, emotions, and behavior domain of the CPCHILD was predictive of meaningful improvement after surgery (P≤0001) CONCLUSION Analysis of 157 CP patients revealed a meaningful improvement in an HRQOL in 363% of the patients These patients tended to have lower preoperative HRQOL, suggesting more "room for improvement" from surgery A lower score within the comfort, emotions, and behavior domain of the CPCHILD was predictive of meaningful improvement after surgery Radiographic parameters of deformity or curve correction were not associated with meaningful improvement after surgery LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level II-retrospective review of prospectively collected data

TL;DR: In this article, ownership similarity between two firms affects the likelihood of an acquisition between them, and they found that similarity between acquiring and target firms increased the likelihood that an acquisition would succeed.
Abstract: We study how ownership similarity between two firms affects the likelihood of an acquisition between them. Assortative matching arguments suggest that similarity between acquiring and target firms ...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors develop a model of ideals-based accountability (IBA) which they have witnessed at work in several long-thriving family businesses and characterize IBA according to its missions, leadership, culture, and stakeholder relationships.
Abstract: We develop a model of ideals-based accountability (IBA) which we have witnessed at work in several long-thriving family businesses. The owners and managers of these firms eschew individualism and materiality in the pursuit of ethical ideals such as supporting democracy and bettering the human condition. Although accountability is to these ideals, not for outcomes such as profitability or even reputation, IBA has resulted in outstanding reputations for some firms. We characterize IBA according to its missions, leadership, culture, and stakeholder relationships. We also contrast it with traditional forms of accountability and differentiate IBA from related stakeholder, stewardship, and CSR perspectives. Finally, we examine its manifestations within five long-lived family enterprises, in the process generating propositions to advance the concept.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that firms often do not respond to competitive attacks even when they are aware of an attack and have the capability to counter it, and that this is because they engage in competitive games.

TL;DR: The importance of a long-term orientation to the sustainable management of organizations has been explored in this article, where the authors develop more fully the concept of longterm orientation for sustainable management.
Abstract: Scholars have advocated the importance of a long-term orientation to the sustainable management of organizations, but few have examined its sources. We develop more fully the concept of long-term o...

TL;DR: In 2018, the Irish public voted to repeal the Eighth Amendment to the Irish Constitution, which since 1983 banned abortion in the country as mentioned in this paper, which was not unconnected to wider discussions now taking place around the world concerning gender, reproductive rights, the future of religion, Church-State relationships, democracy and social movements.
Abstract: In 2018, the Irish public voted to repeal the Eighth Amendment to the Irish Constitution, which since 1983 banned abortion in the country. While this was a watershed moment in Irish history, it was not unconnected to wider discussions now taking place around the world concerning gender, reproductive rights, the future of religion, Church–State relationships, democracy and social movements. With this Forum, we want to prompt some anthropological interpretations of Ireland's repeal of the Eighth Amendment as a matter concerning not only reproductive rights, but also questions of life and death, faith and shame, women and men, state power and individual liberty, and more. We also ask what this event might mean (if anything) for other societies dealing with similar issues?

TL;DR: The authors argue that postmodernism is based in large measure upon a misreading of the experience of consumption that the theorists abstract in a way that reinforces abstraction as virtualism, and that auditing is a sign of a shift to political virtualism.
Abstract: This chapter is concerned with the particular role of consumption in understanding the contemporary world, and the author do not pretend to be clear himself as to how far the argument the author makes here works in relation to phenomena such as finance capital or, indeed, the virtualism of virtual reality within computer technologies. Thus it appears that auditing is a sign of a shift to political virtualism. The critique of virtualism is both similar to and different from the critique of capitalism. So, while the narrative that underlies virtualism is intended to be surprisingly encompassing, the author certainly do not mean it to be all-encompassing. Rather, it is that postmodernism is based in large measure upon a misreading of the experience of consumption that the theorists abstract in a way that reinforces abstraction as virtualism.
