Journal ArticleDOI
Optimization of propagation-based x-ray phase-contrast tomography for breast cancer imaging.
Patrycja Baran,Serena Pacilè,Yakov Nesterets,Yakov Nesterets,Sheridan C Mayo,Christian Dullin,Diego Dreossi,Fulvia Arfelli,Darren Thompson,Darren Thompson,Darren Lockie,Mikkaela McCormack,Seyedamir Tavakoli Taba,Francesco Brun,Maurizio Pinamonti,Carolyn Nickson,Chris Hall,Matthew Richard Dimmock,Fabrizio Zanconati,Marian Cholewa,Harry M. Quiney,Patrick C. Brennan,Giuliana Tromba,Tim E. Gureyev +23 more
TL;DR: The results of the analysis indicate that both the objective image quality characteristics and the subjective radiological scores of propagation-based phase-contrast images of breast tissues monotonically increase with the strength of phase contrast which is directly proportional to the product of the radiation wavelength and the sample-to-detector distance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Investigation of the imaging quality of synchrotron-based phase-contrast mammographic tomography
Timur E. Gureyev,Timur E. Gureyev,Sheridan C Mayo,Yakov Nesterets,Yakov Nesterets,Sara Mohammadi,Sara Mohammadi,Darren Lockie,Ralph H Menk,Fulvia Arfelli,Konstantin Mikhailovitch Pavlov,Konstantin Mikhailovitch Pavlov,Marcus J. Kitchen,Fabrizio Zanconati,Christian Dullin,Giuliana Tromba +15 more
TL;DR: In this article, a systematic study of phase-contrast x-ray computed tomography in the propagation-based and analyser-based modes using specially designed phantoms and excised breast tissue samples is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI
X-Ray Phase-Contrast Technology in Breast Imaging: Principles, Options, and Clinical Application.
Seyedamir Tavakoli Taba,Timur E. Gureyev,Maram Alakhras,Maram Alakhras,Sarah J. Lewis,Darren Lockie,Patrick C. Brennan +6 more
TL;DR: Phase-contrast imaging depicts not only the absorption contrast but also the refraction contrast of the transmitted x-ray beam, suggesting that this new modality may overcome some of the diagnostic limitations associated with current clinically available mammography systems and has potential for improving breast cancer detection.
Journal ArticleDOI
A feasibility study of X-ray phase-contrast mammographic tomography at the Imaging and Medical beamline of the Australian Synchrotron.
Yakov Nesterets,Yakov Nesterets,Timur E. Gureyev,Sheridan C Mayo,Andrew W. Stevenson,Andrew W. Stevenson,Darren Thompson,Darren Thompson,Jeremy M. C. Brown,Marcus J. Kitchen,Konstantin Mikhailovitch Pavlov,Konstantin Mikhailovitch Pavlov,Darren Lockie,Francesco Brun,Francesco Brun,Giuliana Tromba +15 more
TL;DR: Analysis of the data collected using a Hamamatsu CMOS Flat Panel Sensor revealed the presence of propagation-based phase contrast and demonstrated significant improvement of the quality of phase-contrast CT imaging compared with conventional (absorption-based) CT, at medically acceptable radiation doses.
Journal ArticleDOI
Clinical application of low-dose phase contrast breast CT: methods for the optimization of the reconstruction workflow.
Serena Pacilè,Francesco Brun,Christian Dullin,Yakov Nesterets,Diego Dreossi,Sara Mohammadi,Maura Tonutti,Fulvio Stacul,Darren Lockie,Fabrizio Zanconati,Agostino Accardo,Giuliana Tromba,Timur E. Gureyev +12 more
TL;DR: The outcomes of this study provide practical guidelines for the optimization of image processing workflows in synchrotron-based phase-contrast mammo-tomography.
