TL;DR: Two different intercalation processes involving chloroaluminate anions at the two discharging plateaus are shown, while C–Cl bonding on the surface, or edges of natural graphite, is found using X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations are employed to investigate the intercalated behaviour of choloraluminateAnions in the graphite electrode.
Abstract: Recently, interest in aluminium ion batteries with aluminium anodes, graphite cathodes and ionic liquid electrolytes has increased; however, much remains to be done to increase the cathode capacity and to understand details of the anion–graphite intercalation mechanism. Here, an aluminium ion battery cell made using pristine natural graphite flakes achieves a specific capacity of ∼110 mAh g−1 with Coulombic efficiency ∼98%, at a current density of 99 mA g−1 (0.9 C) with clear discharge voltage plateaus (2.25–2.0 V and 1.9–1.5 V). The cell has a capacity of 60 mAh g−1 at 6 C, over 6,000 cycles with Coulombic efficiency ∼ 99%. Raman spectroscopy shows two different intercalation processes involving chloroaluminate anions at the two discharging plateaus, while C–Cl bonding on the surface, or edges of natural graphite, is found using X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Finally, theoretical calculations are employed to investigate the intercalation behaviour of choloraluminate anions in the graphite electrode. Rechargeable aluminium ion batteries are an emerging class of energy storage device. Here the authors reveal high-quality natural graphite as a promising cathode for Al-ion batteries, also identifying chloroaluminate anion intercalation in graphite by Raman spectroscopy.

TL;DR: In this article, a meso-carbon microbead film (FS-MCMB) was used as the cathode of a dual-ion battery with a specific capacity of 83.6 mAh/g and remarkable long-term stability over 300 cycles.
Abstract: In this work, both advantages of sodium-ion batteries and dual-ion batteries have been combined in an innovated sodium-ion-based dual-ion battery (SDI) system using a Na metal film as anode and a freestanding meso-carbon microbead film (FS-MCMB) as cathode. FS-MCMB in SDI battery exhibited a superior working performance with the specific capacity of 83.6 mAh/g and a remarkable long-term stability over 300 cycles. The SDI battery with FS-MCMB exhibited an advantage of high mass density loading in the range of 2–7.5 mg cm–2, which was equal to a comparable capacity of 78–83 mAh/g. The electrochemical impedance analysis indicated that FS-MCMB provided a superior permeability, resulting in facilitating electrolyte infiltration into MCMB structure. In-situ XRD and ex-situ Raman spectroscopy were utilized to characterize the intercalating/deintercalating process of PF6– anions into/out of MCMB during charging/discharging processes. Finally, theoretical calculations further confirmed the structural arrangement o...

TL;DR: The P/Co-FeS2 catalyst with surface phosphide doping for hydrogen evolution reaction in acidic solutions exhibits superior HER electrochemical performance with overpotential of -90 mV at 100 mA cm-2 and Tafel slope of 41 mV/decade and excellent durability.
Abstract: Hydrogen is considered as sustainable and environmentally friendly energy for global energy demands in the future. Here a Co-FeS2 catalyst with surface phosphide doping (P/Co-FeS2 ) for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic solutions is developed. The P/Co-FeS2 exhibits superior HER electrochemical performance with overpotential of -90 mV at 100 mA cm-2 and Tafel slope of 41 mV/decade and excellent durability.

TL;DR: Large-scale and highly oriented Langmuir-Blodgett films of uniform silver nanocrystals have been fabricated as a highly efficient and matrix-free sample plate for SALDI MS to improve the signal intensity, background noise, signal-to-noise ratio and reproducibility.
Abstract: The design of a homogeneous sample plate to solve the sweet heating spot issues is the key step to expand the applicability of surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (SALDI MS). Herein, large-scale and highly oriented Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of uniform silver nanocrystals have been fabricated as a highly efficient and matrix-free sample plate for SALDI MS. Three individual silver nanocrystals (cubes, cuboctahedra and octahedra) assembled LB films have been applied as the sample plates for glucose detection by SALDI MS without an additional matrix. The results show that the signal intensity, background noise, signal-to-noise ratio and reproducibility have been significantly improved using LB films as the sample plate in comparison with commercial matrixes of CHCA and DHB. In particular, a relative signal of 5.7% was obtained for LB films of silver cuboctahedra. The significant improvement in the SALDI MS measurement could be attributed to the homogenous dissipation of laser irradiation energy to create a large area of the sweet heating spot on well-oriented silver cuboctahedra-based LB film. This ready-to-use sample plate has the potential for widespread commercial applications in SALDI MS.
