Current plate motions

SUMMARY 
We determine best-fitting Euler vectors, closure-fitting Euler vectors, and a new global model (NUVEL-1) describing the geologically current motion between 12 assumed-rigid plates by inverting plate motion data we have compiled, critically analysed, and tested for self-consistency. We treat Arabia, India and Australia, and North America and South America as distinct plates, but combine Nubia and Somalia into a single African plate because motion between them could not be reliably resolved. The 1122 data from 22 plate boundaries inverted to obtain NUVEL-1 consist of 277 spreading rates, 121 transform fault azimuths, and 724 earthquake slip vectors. We determined all rates over a uniform time interval of 3.0m.y., corresponding to the centre of the anomaly 2A sequence, by comparing synthetic magnetic anomalies with observed profiles. The model fits the data well. Unlike prior global plate motion models, which systematically misfit some spreading rates in the Indian Ocean by 8–12mm yr−1, the systematic misfits by NUVEL-1 nowhere exceed ∼3 mm yr−1. The model differs significantly from prior global plate motion models. For the 30 pairs of plates sharing a common boundary, 29 of 30 P071, and 25 of 30 RM2 Euler vectors lie outside the 99 per cent confidence limits of NUVEL-1. Differences are large in the Indian Ocean where NUVEL-1 plate motion data and plate geometry differ from those used in prior studies and in the Pacific Ocean where NUVEL-1 rates are systematically 5–20 mm yr−1 slower than those of prior models. The strikes of transform faults mapped with GLORIA and Seabeam along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge greatly improve the accuracy of estimates of the direction of plate motion. These data give Euler vectors differing significantly from those of prior studies, show that motion about the Azores triple junction is consistent with plate circuit closure, and better resolve motion between North America and South America. Motion of the Caribbean plate relative to North or South America is about 7 mm yr−1 slower than in prior global models. Trench slip vectors tend to be systematically misfit wherever convergence is oblique, and best-fitting poles determined only from trench slip vectors differ significantly from their corresponding closure-fitting Euler vectors. The direction of slip in trench earthquakes tends to be between the direction of plate motion and the normal to the trench strike. Part of this bias may be due to the neglect of lateral heterogeneities of seismic velocities caused by cold subducting slabs, but the larger part is likely caused by independent motion of fore-arc crust and lithosphere relative to the overriding plate.

Background Human-induced earthquakes have become an important topic of political and scientific discussion, owing to the concern that these events may be responsible for widespread damage and an overall increase in seismicity. It has long been known that impoundment of reservoirs, surface and underground mining, withdrawal of fluids and gas from the subsurface, and injection of fluids into underground formations are capable of inducing earthquakes. In particular, earthquakes caused by injection have become a focal point, as new drilling and well-completion technologies enable the extraction of oil and gas from previously unproductive formations. Earthquakes with magnitude (M) ≥ 3 in the U.S. midcontinent, 1967–2012. After decades of a steady earthquake rate (average of 21 events/year), activity increased starting in 2001 and peaked at 188 earthquakes in 2011. Human-induced earthquakes are suspected to be partially responsible for the increase. Advances Microearthquakes (that is, those with magnitudes below 2) are routinely produced as part of the hydraulic fracturing (or “fracking”) process used to stimulate the production of oil, but the process as currently practiced appears to pose a low risk of inducing destructive earthquakes. More than 100,000 wells have been subjected to fracking in recent years, and the largest induced earthquake was magnitude 3.6, which is too small to pose a serious risk. Yet, wastewater disposal by injection into deep wells poses a higher risk, because this practice can induce larger earthquakes. For example, several of the largest earthquakes in the U.S. midcontinent in 2011 and 2012 may have been triggered by nearby disposal wells. The largest of these was a magnitude 5.6 event in central Oklahoma that destroyed 14 homes and injured two people. The mechanism responsible for inducing these events appears to be the well-understood process of weakening a preexisting fault by elevating the fluid pressure. However, only a small fraction of the more than 30,000 wastewater disposal wells appears to be problematic—typically those that dispose of very large volumes of water and/or communicate pressure perturbations directly into basement faults. Outlook Injection-induced earthquakes, such as those that struck in 2011, clearly contribute to the seismic hazard. Quantifying their contribution presents difficult challenges that will require new research into the physics of induced earthquakes and the potential for inducing large-magnitude events. The petroleum industry needs clear requirements for operation, regulators must have a solid scientific basis for those requirements, and the public needs assurance that the regulations are sufficient and are being followed. The current regulatory frameworks for wastewater disposal wells were designed to protect potable water sources from contamination and do not address seismic safety. One consequence is that both the quantity and timeliness of information on injection volumes and pressures reported to regulatory agencies are far from ideal for managing earthquake risk from injection activities. In addition, seismic monitoring capabilities in many of the areas in which wastewater injection activities have increased are not capable of detecting small earthquake activity that may presage larger seismic events.

Injection-Induced Earthquakes

[1] The GPS-derived velocity field (1988–2005) for the zone of interaction of the Arabian, African (Nubian, Somalian), and Eurasian plates indicates counterclockwise rotation of a broad area of the Earth's surface including the Arabian plate, adjacent parts of the Zagros and central Iran, Turkey, and the Aegean/Peloponnesus relative to Eurasia at rates in the range of 20–30 mm/yr. This relatively rapid motion occurs within the framework of the slow-moving (∼5 mm/yr relative motions) Eurasian, Nubian, and Somalian plates. The circulatory pattern of motion increases in rate toward the Hellenic trench system. We develop an elastic block model to constrain present-day plate motions (relative Euler vectors), regional deformation within the interplate zone, and slip rates for major faults. Substantial areas of continental lithosphere within the region of plate interaction show coherent motion with internal deformations below ∼1–2 mm/yr, including central and eastern Anatolia (Turkey), the southwestern Aegean/Peloponnesus, the Lesser Caucasus, and Central Iran. Geodetic slip rates for major block-bounding structures are mostly comparable to geologic rates estimated for the most recent geological period (∼3–5 Myr). We find that the convergence of Arabia with Eurasia is accommodated in large part by lateral transport within the interior part of the collision zone and lithospheric shortening along the Caucasus and Zagros mountain belts around the periphery of the collision zone. In addition, we find that the principal boundary between the westerly moving Anatolian plate and Arabia (East Anatolian fault) is presently characterized by pure left-lateral strike slip with no fault-normal convergence. This implies that “extrusion” is not presently inducing westward motion of Anatolia. On the basis of the observed kinematics, we hypothesize that deformation in the Africa-Arabia-Eurasia collision zone is driven in large part by rollback of the subducting African lithosphere beneath the Hellenic and Cyprus trenches aided by slab pull on the southeastern side of the subducting Arabian plate along the Makran subduction zone. We further suggest that the separation of Arabia from Africa is a response to plate motions induced by active subduction.

GPS constraints on continental deformation in the Africa-Arabia-Eurasia continental collision zone and implications for the dynamics of plate interactions

Summary By means of two- and three-dimensional numerical modelling of subduction, we investigate the dominant dynamic controls on trench migration. Geometrical and rheological parameters are systematically changed to study the role of the plate stiffness and lithospheric ageing on trench migration. Plate stiffness depends on slab thickness and relative viscosity and density contrasts, and can be interpreted as the key parameter in controlling trench motion. Stiff lithosphere promotes advancing trench migration, whereas weak slabs retreat. As revealed by the global kinematic data from current subduction zones in different hot spot reference frames, young trenches move on Earth’s surface in retreating (e.g. rolling back), and old plates advance (forward). By combining model results and natural data, we argue that old/stiff plates migrate in advancing, whereas young/weak slabs roll back.

GRS vs. OMS Calibration in LISA Pathfinder Data Analysis

After more than 4 Earth years of operation on the martian surface monitoring the planet&amp;#8217;s ground vibrations, the InSight&amp;#8217;s seismometer is now retired. Throughout the mission, analyses of body waves from marsquakes and impacts have led to important discoveries about the martian interior structure of the crust, mantle, and core. Recent detection of surface waves, together with gravimetric modeling enabled the characterization of crustal structure variations away from the InSight landing site and showed that average crustal velocity and density structure is similar between the northern lowlands and the southern highlands. Especially for the observed overtones and multi-orbiting surface waves in S1222a, we find the depth sensitivity expands down to the uppermost mantle close to 90 km. Furthermore, our 3D wavefield simulations show significantly broadened volumetric sensitivity of the higher-orbit surface waves. These new constraints obtained by our surface wave analyses provide an important opportunity not only to refine and verify our previous radially symmetric models of the planet&amp;#8217;s interior structure but also to improve understanding of seismo-tectonic environments on Mars. Here, we summarize our recent effort in the analyses of surface waves on Mars and discuss the inferred crustal property and its global implications. 

Crustal structure observed by the InSight mission to Mars

La géothermie de faible profondeur avec des pompes à chaleur correspond à l’état actuel de la technique et est déjà largement répandue en Suisse. Au sein du futur système énergétique, la géothermie de moyenne à grande profondeur (1 à 6 km) devrait également jouer un rôle important, notamment en matière de fourniture de chaleur pour les bâtiments et les process industriels. Cette forme d’utilisation de la chaleur géothermique nécessite un sous-sol bien perméable, permettant à un fluide – généralement de l’eau – d’engranger la chaleur naturellement présente dans la roche et de la transporter jusqu’à la surface. Dans les roches sédimentaires, cette condition est généralement vérifiée du fait de la structure naturelle, tandis que dans les granites et les gneiss la perméabilité doit être générée artificiellement par injection d’eau. La chaleur ainsi récupérée augmente au fur et à mesure de la profondeur de forage : la température souterraine atteint environ 40°C à 1 km de profondeur et environ 100°C à 3 km de profondeur.
 Pour entraîner une turbine à vapeur en vue de produire de l’électricité, des températures supérieures à 100°C sont nécessaires. Étant donné que cela implique de forer à des profondeurs de 3 à 6 km, le risque de sismicité induite augmente en conséquence.
 Le sous-sol peut également servir à stocker de la chaleur ou des gaz, par exemple de l’hydrogène ou du méthane, ou encore à enfouir de façon permanente du CO2. À cet effet, les mêmes exigences que pour l’extraction de chaleur doivent être vérifiées et le réservoir doit en outre être surmonté d’une couche étanche, empêchant le gaz de s’échapper. Le projet conjoint « Énergie hydroélectrique et géothermique » du PNR « Énergie » était avant tout consacré à la question de savoir où en Suisse trouver des couches de sol appropriées, répondant de manière optimale aux exigences des différentes utilisations. Un deuxième grand axe de recherche concernait les mesures visant à réduire la sismicité induite par les forages profonds et les dommages aux structures qui en résultent. Par ailleurs, des modèles et des simulations ont été élaborés dans le but de mieux comprendre les processus souterrains qui interviennent dans la mise en œuvre et l’exploitation des ressources géothermiques.
 En résumé, les résultats de recherche montrent que la Suisse jouit de bonnes conditions pour l’utilisation de la géothermie de moyenne profondeur (1-3 km), tant pour le parc de bâtiments que pour les processus industriels. L’optimisme est également de mise en ce qui concerne le stockage saisonnier de chaleur et de gaz. Le potentiel de stockage définitif de CO2 dans des quantités pertinentes s’avère en revanche plutôt limité. Concernant la production d’électricité à partir de la chaleur issue de la géothermie profonde (> 3 km), il n’existe pas encore de certitude définitive quant à l’importance du potentiel économiquement exploitable du sous-sol. Des installations de démonstration exploitées industriellement sont absolument nécessaires à cet égard, afin de renforcer l’acceptation par la population et les investisseurs.

Europe and its surroundings operate an impressive number of seismometers and accelerometers, accommodating high and lower quality sensors, permanent and mobile stations, land-based and ocean bottom systems. The equipment and observatories are largely funded by national resources and priorities. Recently a number of initiatives, among them NERIES , have accomplished a significant step towards integrating this diverse network into a homogeneous real-time network, data archival and data access facility, thus providing a powerful research tool for future earth science research and hazard assessment.
