Effects of Smoking Intervention and the Use of an Inhaled Anticholinergic Bronchodilator on the Rate of Decline of FEV1: The Lung Health Study

TL;DR: An aggressive smoking intervention program significantly reduces the age-related decline in FEV 1 in middle-aged smokers with mild airways obstruction and use of an inhaled anticholinergic bronchodilator results in a relatively small improvement inFEV 1 that appears to be reversed after the drug is discontinued.
Journal ArticleDOI

Metered-Dose Inhaler Adherence in a Clinical Trial

TL;DR: It is concluded that self-report and weighing of inhaler canisters overestimate adherence to the prescribed regimens and a substantial number of monitored inhaler users appear to deliberately dump their medication prior to follow-up visits.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of Weight Gain on Pulmonary Function after Smoking Cessation in the Lung Health Study

TL;DR: Weight gain was associated with lower fifth-year FEV1 and FVC in all smoking categories: continuous smokers, intermittent smokers, and sustained quitters and men showed more impairment of FVC with weight gain than did women, possibly because of differential patterns of fat deposition.
