Drug development for neglected diseases: a deficient market and a public-health policy failure
Patrice Trouiller,Piero Olliaro,Piero Olliaro,Els Torreele,James Orbinski,James Orbinski,Richard Laing,Richard Laing,Nathan Ford +8 more
TL;DR: It is found that, of 1393 new chemical entities marketed between 1975 and 1999, only 16 were for tropical diseases and tuberculosis, and there is a 13-fold greater chance of a drug being brought to market for central-nervous-system disorders or cancer than for a neglected disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nifurtimox-eflornithine combination therapy for second-stage African Trypanosoma brucei gambiense trypanosomiasis: a multicentre, randomised, phase III, non-inferiority trial
Gerardo Priotto,Serena Kasparian,Wilfried Mutombo,Daniel Ngouama,Sara Ghorashian,Ute Arnold,Salah Ghabri,Elisabeth Baudin,Vincent Buard,Serge Kazadi-Kyanza,Medard Ilunga,Willy Mutangala,Gabriele Pohlig,Caecilia Schmid,Unni Karunakara,Els Torreele,Victor Kande +16 more
TL;DR: The efficacy of NECT is non-inferior to that of eflornithine monotherapy, which is suitable for first-line use in HAT control programmes and potentially protective against the emergence of resistant parasites.
Journal ArticleDOI

Rannan-Eliya +29 more
TL;DR: A group of respected global health practitioners reflecting on lessons learned from the Ebola outbreak describe some of the major threats to individual and collective human health, as well as the values and recommendations that should be considered to counteract such threats in the future.
Journal ArticleDOI
Fexinidazole – A New Oral Nitroimidazole Drug Candidate Entering Clinical Development for the Treatment of Sleeping Sickness
Els Torreele,Bernadette Bourdin Trunz,David Tweats,David Tweats,Marcel Kaiser,Marcel Kaiser,Reto Brun,Reto Brun,Guy Mazué,Michael A. Bray,Bernard Pécoul +10 more
TL;DR: Fexinidazole is shown to be a short-course, safe and effective oral treatment curing both acute and chronic HAT and that could be implemented at the primary health care level and the results of the preclinical pharmacological and safety studies indicate that fexinidrazole is a safe andeffective oral drug candidate with no untoward effects that would preclude evaluation in man.
Journal ArticleDOI
Global framework on essential health R&D
Pierre Chirac,Els Torreele +1 more
TL;DR: One of the critical issues to be discussed at the next World Health Assembly will be a resolution about a global framework on essential health research and development, which is clearly shown by the number of drugs targeting neglected tropical diseases.
