Arsenic Exposure During Pregnancy and Size at Birth: A Prospective Cohort Study in Bangladesh
Anisur Rahman,Marie Vahter,Allan H. Smith,Barbro Nermell,Mohammed Yunus,Shams El Arifeen,Lars Åke Persson,Eva-Charlotte Ekström +7 more
TL;DR: A significant negative dose effects were found with birth weight and head and chest circumferences at a low level of arsenic exposure (<100 microg/L in urine), which warrants further investigation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Exclusive breastfeeding promotion by peer counsellors in sub-Saharan Africa (PROMISE-EBF) : a cluster-randomised trial
Thorkild Tylleskär,Debra Jackson,Nicolas Meda,Ingunn Marie S. Engebretsen,Mickey Chopra,Abdoulaye Hama Diallo,Tanya Doherty,Tanya Doherty,Eva-Charlotte Ekström,Lars Thore Fadnes,Ameena Ebrahim Goga,Chipepo Kankasa,Jørn Klungsøyr,Carl Lombard,Victoria Nankabirwa,Victoria Nankabirwa,Jolly Nankunda,Jolly Nankunda,Philippe Van de Perre,Philippe Van de Perre,David Sanders,Rebecca Shanmugam,Halvor Sommerfelt,Halvor Sommerfelt,Henry Wamani,James K Tumwine +25 more
TL;DR: The primary outcomes were prevalance of EBF and diarrhoea reported by mothers for infants aged 12 weeks and 24 weeks and prevalence ratios were adjusted for cluster effects and sites.
Journal ArticleDOI
Association of arsenic exposure during pregnancy with fetal loss and infant death: a cohort study in Bangladesh.
Anisur Rahman,Marie Vahter,Eva-Charlotte Ekström,Mahfuzar Rahman,Abu Haider Mohammad Golam Mustafa,Mohammad A. Wahed,Mohammed Yunus,Lars Åke Persson +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the effect of arsenic exposure on fetal and infant survival in a cohort of 29,134 pregnancies identified by the health and demographic surveillance system in Matlab, Bangladesh, in 1991-2000 was evaluated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Accumulation of cadmium in human placenta interacts with the transport of micronutrients to the fetus.
Maria Kippler,A. M. Waheedul Hoque,A. M. Waheedul Hoque,Rubhana Raqib,Helena Öhrvik,Eva-Charlotte Ekström,Marie Vahter +6 more
TL;DR: The Cd concentrations in placenta were clearly elevated, which seemed to impair Zn transfer to the fetus, and the Cd-related impairment of Zn in umbilical cord blood seemed to decrease size at birth.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of prenatal micronutrient and early food supplementation on maternal hemoglobin, birth weight, and infant mortality among children in Bangladesh: the MINIMat randomized trial.
Lars Åke Persson,Shams El Arifeen,Eva-Charlotte Ekström,Kathleen M. Rasmussen,Edward A. Frongillo,Yunus +5 more
TL;DR: Among pregnant women in poor communities in Bangladesh, treatment with multiple micronutrients, including iron and folic acid combined with early food supplementation, vs a standard program that included treatment with iron andfolic acid and usual food supplementation resulted in decreased childhood mortality.
